Not using the correct oil can cause premature cam, rocker, and lifter failure. Oil meeting VW spec 505.01 is what these engines need. Shell does not produce an oil meeting this spec. The easiest oils to get in the US that meet this spec are Liqui Moly and Pentosin. My BRM based jetta archived over 400K miles with the stock turbo using Pentosin 5w40.
