Oh, Baby - This is what I have been looking for!

*by J***G on Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2020*

I must have around 10 or 11 Blues Guitar Instructional books and a few DVDs. They all give good information but literally none have captured the kind of Blues that I love. This one is hitting the nail on the head for me. I just got the dang thing today and after going through the first 3 chapters, I am already capturing the sounds that I have heard in my head have not been able to get into my playing. This is what I had dare to hope for when I first saw a video of Keith Wyatt on Youtube. I loved his playing and his book is showing me how to do it.The ideas in the first few chapters were simple, but in trying to learn 4 or 5 music genres, I just did not hit on it. Now, I can hear Muddy Watters in my playing. I won't spoil what the book has with specifics, but I will see that if you like your Blues with lots of bends, vibrato, slides, and lyricism the way Muddy, Albert King, and BB King played, you should love this book. Thus far, he has explained his ideas and then wrote a battery of short licks for us to go through and internalize, one after another. It makes you feel like you are talking through the guitar and I now know which intervals to bend to get that authentic sound.Looking ahead in the book, there is a lot more it has to offer - a lot as this is a very thick book when compared to my other Blues books. These Musician's Institute books can be large and full of ideas. I can't wait to get to the sections on 12/8ths blues and the one with the 9th intervals.I wish I could have had this books years ago (I have been playing for over 14 years), but I have to admit, I don't think I could have really appreciated it the way that I do now with my developed ear. Thank you, Keith!UPDATE: I am up to chapter 12. I have not been disappointed int he least. This author has me bending, slipping and sliding all up and down the neck, using not just the Minor Pentatonic scale. This is the best book on the Blues for me. Chapter 8, which begins on page 85, starts getting into 12-Bar Blues structure, not only using easy chord voicings, but also teaching you to solo effetively through the chords as they change. This is so exciting for me. This book is getting me to the skill level that I have always dreamed off with its indepth instruction and its teaching of traditional techniques and practices. Wow!

The best blues guitar soloing book I’ve seen

*by P***. on Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2022*

Honestly, this is one of the best guitar books that I have run across in any genre. Keith is a real pro and explains his approach in a detailed but easy to understand manner. His chapter summaries are amazingly well done. I bought this book awhile ago and liked it immediately, but never really dug into it. For the last year I have methodically worked through the chapters with my teacher as well as utilizing Keith’s videos on Artistworks Music. You learn a variety of licks and phrases in the 5 CAGED positions and learn how to link them together to create very cool solos. Keith’s approach to mixing the major and minor tones is somewhat unique, and it made things finally click for me. I always wanted to be able to jam over a 12 bar blues and now I can. So much fun. Thank you Keith!

Finally, a holistic approach to blues music theory

*by S***U on Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2016*

Finally, a holistic approach to blues music theory. I've spent countless hours in books, web pages and YouTube trying understand how to apply scales to blues soloing - only to find myself facing an arcane puzzle of switching between scales and/or arpeggios. Keith Wyatt’s approach makes total sense to me. It's exactly the kind of context needed to embrace the melodic elements of a blues solo - using the pentatonic scale with blue-notes as an elemental frame-of-reference and bringing the appropriate color tones to bear when needed. Brilliant and elegant in my humble opinion.I'm an advanced-intermediate level fingerstyle blues player and teacher that decided to go outside of my current comfort zone and learn how to solo and improvise in a blues context. I've only worked through chapter 6 at this point, but I'm confident that the rest of this learning experience will be as useful and productive as what I've accomplished so far. Excellent explanations and exercises that drill right down to the fundamental techniques and nuances that make music the Blues. And, just about every exercise can be applied to a soloing or jamming situation. So your blues toolkit grows as soon as you start the book.Great book for self-learners like me and I also think Mr. Wyatt's method would work extremely well in a teaching context.
