Mannitol is a low-calorie carbohydrate. It may be a useful alternative sweetener. Mannitol is about a half as sweet as sucrose and with cooling effect. Mannitol is also widely used in hard and soft candies, flavored jam and jelly spreads, confections and frostings, chewing gum.

Review: Works for UTIs as well as D-Mannose and a lot cheaper - Yes, Mannitol does work to treat and keep away chronic UTIs, as well as D-Mannose, and is a lot cheaper, mainly because Mannitol has been used in the food industry for a long time as a sugar substitute, and is readily available in bulk quantities. The original paper that described how and why both D-Mannose and D-Mannitol work was "Effect of Carbohydrates on Adherence of Escherichia coli to Human Urinary Tract Epithelial Cells" published in Infection and Immunity, Nov. 1980, p. 531-537. You can Google it and read it. Basically, most UTIs are caused by E. Coli, and E. Coli cause chronic UTIs that are hard to wipe out with antibiotics by adhering to the epithelial cells of the bladder. But, most E.Coli also readily bind both Mannose and Mannitol and this make them less adherent to the epithelial cells, and the E. Coli can then be washed away by drinking lots of fluids and emptying your bladder frequently. Both Mannose and Mannitol are not absorbed as well as glucose/sucrose/fructose and both are also not metabolized to any extent. So they don't make you gain weight or make your diabetes worse. The bad news is that some UTIs are not caused by E. Coli, and some strains of E. Coli do not bind either Mannose or Mannitol, so it doesn't always work for everybody. Plus, ingesting a lot of sugars into your gut that don't get absorbed into your body leaves these sugars in your gut where the gut bacteria start digesting them, and this may cause loose stools or diarrhea, as well as lots and lots of gas. This does seem to improve with time, though, if you persist and let your gut flora adjust to it.

I have used several other kinds of their bulk suppliments with great results and quite the cost savings. This is as very bit pure as they say it is. It's sweet so it's like swallowing a spoonful of powdered sugar. I was reaching the point ready to hit the walk-in clinics for antibiotics this evening, but I received my order of this stuff this afternoon and within 6 hours of taking my doses, I was able to get to sleep and won't need to get antibiotics in the morning! This is the bomb when it comes to bladder infections. It works by not letting the bad bacteria get attached to the bladder walls, therefore you need to drink lots and take this and it gets eliminated pretty quickly, 3-4 days. I will also be using it as a sugar substitute. I am a happy camper tonight. Female bladder infections are so uncomfortable!
