Would this be too big fot a 6 year old?

This might be ok for a 6yr old. Depending on weight & height, you can adjust the straps for comfort. Honestly, I did not keep this item long at all. I ended up returning because while I thought I would like the crossover strap, it did not accommodate me (chest wise) like a regular two strap bag would. But a child that small might actually work out. Though I did not keep this item long enough to really be able to tell you specifics on the size of it. Hope this helps a little.

Will the earphone hole fit the new iPhone X jack?

Yes the hole is cut in and X style so it should fit. I have iPhone XR and the jack fits just fine.
