But as it moved on it became just a bunch of description to me. I was so looking forward to it. Though the concept was good and new I didn't felt the book like i had expected.The descriptions were amazing but didn't had a grip.The disclosure of Gabe's secret was as simple as it can be. Mara didn't even started by it even she predicted it. And the thing with Blossom, she was just a guest appearance though I think she would've been given more importance.I won't say I didn't like this book. Sure, it was something beyond my scope but still had it's charm. 😊 ### ⭐⭐⭐ My absolute favourite Hocking work is the Trylle Trilogy *by L***L on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 February 2017* I'm a big fan of Amanda Hocking and have read all her books. My absolute favourite Hocking work is the Trylle Trilogy, which I have read a couple of times a year, every year since it's publication. The Hollowland series is also really good.Freeks: I enjoyed the story but felt that it would have benefited from more character development: we didn't get to know all the major characters as well as we might. I would have liked to have learnt more about Gabe's and Mara's ancestry. I felt that the book was more like an introduction to a series than the standalone it apparently is.I was confused as to why Gabe's parents needed to work, when they lived in a "mansion-like" house, full of luxurious things. The book gave the impression that Gabe's family were rich but then muddled the story by making his Dad a hands-on restaurant/bar owner and his Mum a civil servant. I understand that his Mum may have had influence through her job but as that influence was only needed every few years it seemed unnecessary.I enjoyed the setting of a carnival and Mara's more unusual upbringing. I think that the book was designed to be dark but to be honest I didn't really find the "scary scenes" scary ... it lacked the tension of other books written by Hocking (like the Hollowland and Watersong books ). I was bemused by the choice to set the story in 1987 (a year I remember well, as I was a young person myself then) as here in the UK I'd never seen a side-show such as was described in the book. I always thought they'd died out after the Victorian era. I might be wrong though ... and they may have continued on longer in the USA than they did here.Did I enjoy the story? Yes. Will I read it again? I doubt it.Mini-rant to American authors ... please guys ... there is no such thing as The British accent! The British accent is mentioned in so many books written by American authors (this book included) but the English, Scottish and Welsh (the nationalities that make up Britain) all have extremely different accents ... it would be impossible to combine them to make a British accent. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fantastic Read *by H***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 September 2017* I have enjoyed reading this book. Different from the other books by Amanda Hocking but a great start for what could be a new series. I know this is not a series but would like it to be. I want to follow Mara's and Gabes' stories with the carnival. They have gone through so much together in a short time how does it impact on their future? Will Gabe become a member of the troop or just help with setting things up and maintenance? I have so many questions that want answers. This book itself has lots going on in it from its teen romance to the demons stalking them and trying to kill them to the loss of various friends in their differing ends. The world is described brilliantly as are the characters and their roles within the story. From minor characters to major players they all have a role in how this story plays out. The twist is a good idea and is the reason Gabe ends up with the carnival. I wish Mara, Gabe and the rest of the carnival characters well and hope we meet them again in the future.
