Real Answer: Darker, then lighter. The reason I say this is that test strips only show the amount of ketones your body ISN'T using, so how it really works is. 1. when you fist start trying to get into ketosis the strips should be light because your body isn't really producing many ketones. 2. the strips will get darker as your body starts producing more Ketones but cant effectively use them, so you excrete most of them. 3. the strips will get lighter after your body learns to use ketones and now you excrete less of them. Hopefully that Explains how Keto urinalysis strips works. Long story short, they only pick up what your body isn't using, so when you are using ketones the strips wont be dark anymore. **Q: What volume measurement do these strips use? My other brand uses mg/dL but those numbers don't match with this chart** A: The Smackfat Ketone Strips use mmol/L; however, conversion between the two is fairly easy. The molecular weight of acetoacetic acid, which these strips detect, is about 102 mg/mmol. So to a whole-number approximation, 100 mg/dL = 10 mmol/L. (actually 9.8). Also note the difference in reading times: 40 sec. vs. 15 sec. I prefer the longer time of the Smackfat Strips because I just do a mental count, and an error of 1 second is almost 7% error in a reading time of 15 seconds, but only a 2.5% error with a reading time of 40 seconds. **Q: I don't understand what these readings mean: "Small" "medium". What does that tell me? Could someone tell me how to read these.** A: The color spectrum doesn't mean a whole lot because ketone urine concentration is pretty arbitrary, based on a lot of factors. Just use the numbers/colors for a loose personal guide over time. For me, when I'm eating fewer than 25 grams of carbs per day I get the large range (8-16). When eating about 50 grams of carbs I get the low range (1.5). Any more than that and I show zero. Unless you're diabetic, there isn't anything you need to worry about with ketone levels. **Q: When do we test and what exactly are we looking for? Been doing Wildfit for 90 days and my test early this afternoon was the light pink.
