Once installed you can rotate the shaft to any position.Installed four C size batteries, button in first = Positive side first. Tested out on metal surface, yes sparking seen on contact with metal, and verified after releasing button retouched metal and yes discharge seen from stored charge. Will the Magrath protect us if need be?** A: Yes it will protect you and your dog. Just becareful and don't accidentally hit him with it **Q: Can it be used to help break up dog fights** A: Dogs shouldn't be off leash to attack other dogs to be shocked. I'm sure it is preferable to a bullet. Low voltage to break the attack drive. Used it once the owner of the other dog thanked me for not macing the dog which causes a lot of unnecessary suffering long after the attack. **Q: Also what batteries does it use? High-drain 18650 rechargeables? It uses two fewer batteries than my old one (4 vs. 6) did and seems to deliver a much more potent charge. Its construction is more robust than my old one I used for thirty some odd years. By the way, I am a cattleman and I use the cattle prod when a cow, bull, heifer or steer is reluctant to proceed down a chute or to load in a trailer.
