## Description

A hardback version of this is available at: https://sentrad.org/psychology/ The soft back and hardback versions include all three of the following volumes in on book: Vol. I: Philosophical Psychology This text, the first of three volumes in the "Introduction to the Science of Mental Health" series, treats the science of mental health and illness and is based on the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. The text is divided into three parts: What constitutes a valid science of psychology; The principles one must know in order to discuss mental health and illness; What is mental health and illness according to St. Thomas and what are the causes of mental health and illness from a Thomistic perspective. The Forward and imprimatur for the text are by His Excellency, Fabian Bruskewitz, bishop of the Diocese of Lincoln, Nebraska. Vol. II: Sacred and Other Spiritual Causes This second of the three volumes addresses the various aspects of Catholic Theology as they affect mental health. Some of the areas covered are: Relationship of psychology to theology; Sin as it affects mental health; Infused Virtues, Sacraments, Gifts of the Holy Ghost and Prayer; Demonic Influences. Vol. III: Quodlibetal Issues and Practica The third text in the series, this volume addresses the various aspects of psychology which are not covered in the prior two volumes as well as the practical application of Thomistic psychology. Some topics included are: Music; The Subconscious Dreams; Hypnotism; Self Knowledge; Personality and Temperaments; Addictions; Developmental and Educational Psychology; Diagnosis and Counseling; The Role of the Empirical in Psychology.

Review: Needed For A Long Time! Excellent! - I recently purchased this volume because I am involved in a ministry that helps individuals and families who claim to have demonic influence or to be under attack. Some of these people aren't, others of them genuinely are. What I have long needed is something like this work to help flesh out a cogent understanding of human psychology that is from my faith's point of view (Roman Catholicism) and does not depend upon what I consider to be the pathetic underpinnings of modern psychology. I can say without reservation that this work more than fills that need. It is excellent! Father Ripperger's three-volumes contained in this one massive book is an excellent resource for people like me who need a solidly "orthodox" and Traditional (big "T") response to the claims of modern psychology - especially with regards to accurate diagnosis in cases where psychological issues and demonic presence are confused (as they often are.) Fr. Ripperger, who holds a Ph.D., offers far more than insight and help into demonic influences however, and covers a huge range of issues with regards to the philosophy of mental health and illness (demonic influence as it pertains to psychology is one small section of the book - although a very helpful one to me). One of the more fascinating sections comes at the beginning and lays the philosophical foundation for an authentic Catholic psychology - it is his treatment (explanation) of who we are as human beings - a refreshing Catholic anthropology. We are not mere advanced animals, we are made imago Dei - in the image of God, and that should shape every aspect of psychology. Yet, psychology today denies this foundation and thus its treatment and solutions are not working - how can it? For example, sin, because it mars the relationship of God and grace in our life, will naturally have an effect on our mental health. Of course, psychiatry and addressing chemical and physiological issues are one thing, but treating a directee (patient) with an improper and reductive understanding of that human being that is in front of you is destined to result in less than optimal results. Father Ripperger brings a decidedly Thomistic approach to all of these (which appealed to me instantly), and replaces the woefully deficient psychology of Freud, Jung, and others with a cogent one. This work is very scholarly yet clear and understandable, is well sourced and footnoted with excellent explanations. If you are a Roman Catholic (or a Christian) who has thirsted for an authentic psychology and explanation of the human condition that fits solidly with Sacred Scripture and the teaching Magisterium of the Church, this is where you need to begin. I recommend it wholeheartedly and refer to it regularly. Thank you Father Ripperger.
Review: Understanding design and purpose facilitates mental health - As a scholastic philosopher, Fr. Chad Ripperger, Ph.D., pays close attention to design and purpose. He clearly describes the design and purposes of the immaterial human soul consisting of two its faculties, intellect and will. He does likewise with the material bodily faculties of memory and imagination and with the various sensitive appetites. Philosophy blends into Catholic theology as he treats of virtues, grace, the sacraments, and angelic influences (from both good and evil angels). Fr. Ripperger shows that the mind was designed to think logically, meaning that the mind's purpose is to discover truth. However, unless the mind is properly trained, that purpose will be frustrated. Moreover, one must know the applicable first principles to approach any problem. That requires a comprehensive education. All in all, the book stands counter to contemporary humanities educators, who generally take relativist positions on most issues My only objection, and I may be wrong, is that he dismisses the concept of the human unconscious. His reasons are compelling, but there is plentiful evidence of which he seems unaware. Some of the grammar is questionable. However, the writing is clear throughout.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Excellent work by Father Chad Ripperger.
*by E***A on April 1, 2021*

This is such an amazing work by a Father Chad Ripperger. It contains a simpler but deeper approach, full of divinely inspired analysis of the human mind and human behavior in relation to the moral and spiritual reality of Catholic Christians. I highly recommend this book to all Catholics in order to guide them in their pursuit of spiritual growth and holiness.
