I didn't think I needed them and installed them without. But the derailleur will be a bit misaligned if you don't and the gears will be skipping or trying to slide out. The part you screw it into is actually 2 separate parts I found out. Was not convinced it would work on my 25+ year old Cannondale R300 road bike (Shimano RSX drivetrain), since my old pulley wheels were spikey (and very sharp) and not flattend. Plus this one is not metal I think.
