They work reliably with smokeless fuel provided you use a block of four (about 2" x 2"), which isn't unreasonable. I use a gas barbecue lighter to get them going. Unfortunately, the cardboard boxes are slightly too large to fit in a metal Vailant firelighter box (fire-proof), so I take them out and recycle the carboard boxes . The twin firelighter slabs in each box are a bit fiddly to separate.
