## Description

Product Description Convert your hinged door into a self-closing one with the Prime-Line KC10HD Safety Spring Door Closer. Installation is a breeze thanks to the closer and plastic slide plate being surface mounted. Use this spring door closer on doors and it can close up to 150 pounds of force. It can also be used on both left and right-handed doors. The door closers feature an adjustable closing force and speed. Constructed of diecast materials with a white painted finish, this safety spring door closer can complement any style door. They are U.L. listed with a 1/2 hour fire rating and have a 1 inch wide base, 4-1/4 inch hole center spacing and 4-3/4 inch arm. These closers operate in a pushing-closed manner, rather than in a pulling-closed method, and they do not have a hold open feature. The closer arm of this safety spring closer has the ability to swing a full 180 degrees, but once it is mounted in place, the door’s distance of swing will be reduced to the point of where it makes contact with the bullet-shaped housing of the closer. All fasteners and installation instructions are included with this item. Be sure to view the manufacturer’s How-To Installation Video also linked to this page. Distance of travel: The closer arm of this safety spring closer has the ability to swing a full 180 degrees, but once it is mounted in place, the door’s distance of swing will be reduced to the point of where it makes contact with the bullet-shaped housing of the closer. For a rust and weather resistant closure, consider model numbers KC50HD (white) and KC57US (brown) which are suitable for outdoor/exterior use, designed for use with lightweight gates and screen doors. All fasteners and installation instructions are included with this item. Other colors/finishes include: black, brown, chrome plated and satin chrome plated. Be sure to view the manufacturer’s How-To Installation Video also linked to this page, in the upper left hand corner. Application of white lithium grease to internal compressing springs may be desired, but you should avoid using lubricants like WD-40 which breaks down lubricating grease.

Review: Works Great and a Cinch to Install! - The installment of this spring door closer is incredibly simple. Adjusting the tension is simple enough, and most importantly, it works! I needed this for a door that opens outward onto the patio, and because of this wasn't so sure it was going to function as well, as if it had been installed on a more traditional door. The poor weather has hindered the installation until now and we couldn't be more impressed with this! When I say there was nothing to the installation, I really mean it! We really like the smaller, more attractive appearance of this spring door closer in comparison to others. I will admit that it does make a creaking sound as the spring tightens when opening the door, but it's hardly a nuisance. I was so afraid one of the kids were eventually going to break the glass on the door as it swung open an hit the outdoor light you can see in the picture. Also on windy days the door practically pulls right out of your hands and does the same thing. I'm not sure why the previous owners hadn't done anything to rectify this issue when they installed the doors to begin with. This is the perfect solution in our case, and we can't be happier. Now, I just hope it will be alright outdoors! This is an inexpensive option and is well worth it.
Review: Door Closer Keeps Cats Out Of Laundry Room - The photo shows that the Prime-Line Astra KC10HD Safety Spring Door Closer can be mounted on the door case molding (which isn't flat) using the four screws that come with the product. FYI, it is straddling a concave portion of the molding. When the tension was adjusted strong enough to fully close the door the mechanism sort of growls when you open and close the door, I think because the springs are wound up so tightly the surfaces are rubbing together. However, when enough tension was applied it did shut the door very smoothly until it actually latched. Also, I found that I had to use an Allen wrench to hold the output disk in place so I could screw in the arm in the correct hole. The short threaded rod they give you doesn't help much in some cases where it won't fit between the closer and the adjacent wall. All in all I'm very happy with the product. About drilling the holes: When drilling the holes, it helps if you first use a drill that just barley fits inside the four through-hole mounting hole locations in the closer to mark one location and create a "center" point for the smaller bit that will be used for the screw pilot holes. Hold the mechanism in the place you want to mount it and then insert this larger drill bit into one of the top mounting holes. Only drill a slight divot in the surface of the molding to create a center for the smaller bit you'll use next. Don't drill all the way through the molding with this larger bit or you'll screw up big time! Now remove that first larger bit from the drill, blow out the saw dust, and insert a drill with the inner screw shank diameter through the mechanism so the actual pilot hole for the screw can be drilled all the way through the molding with the mechanism in place, that way it will be at the correct angle. I think the bit I used for this was about 3/32 inch. Don't make the screw pilot bit too small or you'll crack your molding when you install the screws. Once this is done, you can install one of the top mounting bolts and tighten the closer up against the molding. Now you can finish drilling the other three larger holes with very little hassle to help guide the smaller pilot drill bit when you drill the remaining three pilot holes.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: After installation, is there an easy method or control, excluding the use of a separate door stop, to keep the door wide open if needed?**
A: There is not an "easy" method to hold the door open. The only thing to do is use a doorstop.

**Q: Can the closer be disabled without uninstalling it? It appears from the picture that maybe the closing rod could be removed and re-inserted?**
A: As best that I remember, the closing rod can be removed from the hole in the spring assembly. did in fact uninstall the unit by pulling the rod out and separating the door from the spring. The problem was that the spring required so much rotational torque to fully close the door that I needed to use the next to last hole on the cylinder and the cylinder kept on snapping back to a position where the last hole couldn't be reached. I finally managed it by jamming the cylinder by placing the screwdriver in a adjacent hole. This allowed me to hold the cylinder still so that I could reposition the rod .

**Q: I know this is a door closer, but it does soft close or does it accelerate to close?**
A: I have it set to just reach the closed position but not to overcome the door latch and lock the door. In this case it is a soft close. If you increase the tension to close the door until it latches, it will probably accelerate somewhat due to the momentum gained while it swings shut.

**Q: How much pressure does it take to open? Will my 90 lb. Lab. be able to push it open?**
A: You can adjust the closing (and thus opening) force. It should be no problem to adjust it such that a dog can push open the door.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very functional and well-made with some limitations
*by D***S on August 18, 2015*

I bought this spring door closer for a side kitchen door to keep our indoor cat from getting out. The door is old and the frame is warped so the door naturally swings completely open to a stationary position. Before I found this closer on Amazon I didn't even know this kind of closer version existed. I was planning on buying one of those bulky hydraulic rod closers from a big box home improvement store. This one is nice because it only takes a few screws, it is on the opposite side of the door so you really don't see it. It also can be installed in cramped spaces since the mechanism doesn't take up very much space. They offer various colors so you can match it to your décor, and it looks easily paintable. It is made in China, but feels sturdily made. It only took me about ten minutes to install it on a wood door. I didn't even drill any pilot holes first, the screws included were perfect for wood. The biggest drawback is the tensioning of this device. I'd recommend two people if you have to really ratchet up the tension on the spring. They include a tensioning screw which you use to wind it up. Once you go around 3 holes or so, it gets quite dangerous if you lose control of the tension and I can see the spring whipping around and possibly pinching your fingers. We have a fairly heavy vintage warped wood kitchen door working against gravity and it took about 3 holes worth of tension which might have been at the limit of what you can safely wind this to. The instructions clearly say to not over-tension the spring or it will buckle, but there is no clear description of what the limit is. The closer had some minor spring "groaning" when opening and closing the door. I added a little machine oil to see if it quiets down after breaking it in. Overall I'm happy with the purchase. It is well-priced, easy to install, and a very simple design. Once it is configured for your setup you should be good for a long time.
