    An Enchanting Tale

*by B***N on Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2021*

When H. Rider Haggard wrote this novel in 1886, it was in the context of Europe's awakening to colonial possibilities on "the Dark Continent". Africa at the time was like an ink blot into which Haggard gazed and perceived manifold mysteries. Haggard's ink blot told him of a vanished, once mighty civilization, Kor, now much degraded. In this almost inaccessible region reigned She, an ageless woman who had lived over 2000 years. Never growing old, She awaited the return of her long-lost true love, Kallikrates. The original had tragically died, but his descendants passed on, from father to son, the legend of She. At last, one of the descendants, Leo, decides to embark on the perilous journey to Kor, in search of She. Accompanying Leo are his guardian, Ludwig Horace Holly, and a manservant, Job. An enchanting tale of true lovers re-uniting unfolds, though it does not end "happily ever after". I enjoyed She, however this edition of Haggard's novel is hampered by print which ought to be larger and a lack of illustrations. The tale deserves better treatment and hence this edition does not receive the full 5 stars.

    She

*by K***M on Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2013*

I read this book when I was in grade school and I saw this book again while scrolling Amazon's book section. So I thought I'd read it again. It has and always will be a good story. If one can get past the flowery language and the ye's and thou's, The gist is that when this little boy's father died, he was left a chest that could only be opened when he became 21. In the meantime his guardian followed the dead fathers instructions that this child would be educated and well versed in Arabic, Greek and Latin. After his schooling, they then leave on this quest that is revealed to them when they open the chest. Their jungle adventures are so amazing that if it weren't in a book, they would have never lived. As for the rest of the story, you'll just have to read it yourself.

Decent Haggard Read, but Not Great

*by D***T on Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2016*

This is not my first Haggard novel, but I didn't enjoy it as much as some of the others (like King Solomon's Mines). The beginning of the book is interesting, with the whole back story of the quest, but also got bogged down by providing pages and pages of Greek that modern readers can't read. To be honest, the first 30 percent of the book is pretty draggy. However, the adventure part of the story is what you expect from a Haggard novel - intrepid white men traveling into a place where none have been seen for much time. Ayesha (the "She" of the title) is interesting and sinister, but very what the author's time period would consider "feminine".This Kindle version has no sketches (not sure if it is supposed to, but I see the mention in other formats) and is well-edited.
