What's the difference between this popper bowl and using a regular bowl with a lid?** A: As to the part about why is this different than a normal bowl / lid: a normal plastic bowl will not stand up to the heat generated by the kernels & the kernels will melt into the bowl (voice of experience). I did also try Pyrex which WILL work, but the Pyrex will reach and remain at a temperature approximately the same as molten lava. I searched for silicone mixing bowls to replace the Pyrex and eventually searched Microwave Popcorn Popper--boom--sold.
