Christina's Book Blog: Great characters and great storyline!

*by K***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 8, 2014*

“True love transcends logic, Freckles. It’s a blending of minds and souls.” “It makes us feel and see things in ways that normal people don’t. You don’t question it or try to understand it. You just accept it for the gift it is. "The PlotWhen Raine’s swim team is hit with a case of misfortune she starts to suspect that the new members in town have something to do with them. When she starts to notice the runes that are all around her she doesn’t act naïve and demands answers that she doesn’t get. The runes hold the answer to her questions but no one can reveal to her what they mean so for most of the book we spend it trying to figure them out. Along the way Raine must deal with her connection to all the events going on and her guilt over the horror that has befallen her swim team. As well as the loss of her father, her love for her best friend and her growing feelings for her neighbor. The CharactersRaine was such a wonderful heroine. She lives a typical normal teenage life. The only issues she has to deal with his her missing father and her crush on her best friend. But she is like any teenage girl and she enjoys her life. When the mysterious Torin St. James moves next door his cockiness and arrogance makes her furious but she doesn’t let him get to her. She was feisty and fought back when she needed to but always sweet and caring of those she loved.Torin was just GREAT! He comes off as an arrogant bad ass but there is so much more to him. He has a destiny that he didn’t know he was choosing and has been living with the repercussions for eternity. When he moves next door to Raine he knows what his job is and holds no attachments to anything. That of course changes when he actually meets his new neighbor and is she doesn’t fall for his charm. So although it’s against the rules Torin breaks all of them realizing that his need to protect Raine transcends it all. Like every girl in this book you will definitely swoon for Torin and fall in love with him as you learn more about him and his story. Some of the secondary characters are equally as wonderful. Cora and Eirik are Raine’s best friend and through it all they are her biggest supporters. They all look out for each other and are there for each other through all the good and bad times. The RomanceOkay so this book has a bit of a love triangle. Something I detest. But I like when there is really no competition just indecision. I adored Eirik, Raine’s best friend, he was caring and protective of her. It takes him a long time to get the nerve to finally take things to the next level but when he does he is wonderful. Unfortunately, he seemed very distant at times and secretive. I have my questions about him and wonder what his part is in this whole storyline. Now Torin on the other hand was no match for Eirik. The moments between him and Raine were so intense and so funny. They both fought and loved passionately when together. The chemistry between them engulfed the pages and had you wanting more of them. So when things don’t turn out great or when they try to fight what is growing between them it is a sad and frustrating. The Wrap-UpI was blown away by the storyline and characters! Runes was a great start to this series and I can’t wait to continue! This book has great characters, a great storyline and a great cliffhanger that has me wanting to read more! If you are a fan of YA Paranormal Romance this is the series for you! Pick it up now!Happy Reading!

Reminds me of Mortal Instruments, but different too

*by K***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 2, 2014*

I'm relieved that the book changed direction a third of the way through, because up until that point, this read a lot like Mortal Instruments, but with a few differences. I know it has to be tough to come up with unique story lines when there seems to be only so much you can do with a genre, and I'll admit, I wasn't a huge fan of City of Bones originally, so I was leaning towards not being able to finish this at first. Glad I did stick with it though, because by the end, I did like it.Raine is 16 going on 17 and a junior in high school. Although she has friends, she isn't one of the popular kids, and has never had a boyfriend. She does have 2 best friends, Cora and Eirik and spends most of her free time with them, when they aren't participating in swim meets. Until recently, Eirik used to live next door and he and Raine pretty much grew up together. She secretly hopes their friendship would evolve into something more, whereas he seems clueless as to her real feelings. After her father disappears, and just prior to the start of the new school year, Torin moves in next door. He's hot, sexy, and arrogant so of course, he rubs Raine the wrong way. And yet, she can't stop thinking about him. There is just something that is special about Torin. Not only does he live by himself, he drives a Harley, he's confident, and people seem to naturally follow him. Raine may be in love with Eirik, but she can't stay away from Torin. It doesn't help that he always seems to be there when she is in trouble and needs saving. And strange things just keep happening around her lately, from her father's disappearance, to the new kids at the school that either hate her or creep her out, to the deaths of her friends. She'll learn that her mother's kept things from her, that there are things out there that she could never have imagined, and that Torin is more than what he seems.I had a hard time deciding if I liked Raine or not. At first, there wasn't anything overtly wrong with her, but some of her decisions or lack thereof, bothered me. And as I initially stated, the similarities to Mortal Instruments almost made me stop reading this. There was only so much angst I could take from Clary and Jace, two people that it took more than the first book for me to like, that I didn't think I could take reading about another couple just like them. The whole Clary, Jace, Simon vs. Raine, Torin, Eirik was eerily alike, except I liked Raine, Torin, and Eirik more. By the end of the book, I really liked the cast of characters in this book. I definitely was not expecting the cliff hanger we got left with, although how I did not guess that is beyond me.If you like Mortal Instruments, you will either love this or hate it. Some die hard fans will hate that it seems to mimic that series...at least at the beginning, some may love having a new twist on a similar concept. If you like YA books with a paranormal twist, and you haven't read Mortal Instruments, then I think you will like this one.

Book 1 #YA Norse Mythology series

*by R***R on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 on September 24, 2015*

Runes is book 1 in a YA paranormal series which revolves around Norse Mythology. I chose to read this book from the #FridayFiveChallenge and have really enjoyed the mythology storyline.Lorraine Cooper, or Raine to her friends is sweet sixteen and never been kissed. Eirik Seville has been her unofficial boyfriend forever, but they've never taken the next step. All this changes when Raine turns seventeen. Drop-dead gorgeous Torin St James is Raine's new neighbour who knows far too much about Raine and seems to have magical powers of speed and healing. At school three new exchange students from Norway arrive, they have strange tattoos and Raine is targeted by them. Soon Raine is seeing runes around her, on her car, at school and they glow on Torin when his emotions are raised.Torin's presence pushes Eirik's feelings for Raine into the open and they share their first kiss, but it's not Eirik whom Raine thinks about first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Intrigued by Torin, Raine seeks answers, but he is bound by a higher authority and cannot reveal the truth. This was a great way to introduce readers to a new series, with new twists on a popular theme in this genre. I look forward to reading book 2.
