Is the cord nylon or steel please? When it stretches can it be adjusted?

It's nylon, and the ends are accessible. You could replace the cord, and I would suggest that is done by unhooking it at the handle end, and then tying the new one to that and pulling it through from the claw end. You would have to carefully undo the claw end first, as there are a few inches of spare at that end. Probably need some fine nose pliers at the handle end, as there's not much to get hold of.

Please - How sturdy are these - can they pick up half filled glass bottles from hedgerows? I need it to last more than a couple of weeks! Thank you.

Mine has been incredibly sturdy. I beach clean every day and it picks up small and big items. I'm very impressed with its quality.

This picker works great for cans and plastic bottles, even if crushed which is what I do first to get more cans in the litter bag. It is not so good for heavy bottles as it is hard to grip them firmly and then their weigh on the end of a long arm is hard to handle. It will pick up cigarette butts but there is a knack to it if they are trodden too flat.
