Q: Will this soundcard work with Linux; Linux Mint for example?

The card itself should yes but to get the most out of it you NEED the driver and software, Both of which are terrible under Windows and even worse under Linux, Invest in a different external AMP/DAC solution like the iFi Zen Dac 2 for a similar price that needs no software to run.

Q: Is it possible to split multiple outputs on this? eg. game audio on front l/r, desktop/browser audio on rear l/r, and say spotify on the optical out?

I haven't tried anything that deep, it would depend on the sotfware you are using I would imagine. I have it set up so that I can have the main audio through either the headphones or (via line out) to my amp, this is switchable in the Creative Software and is very handy for gaming/Netflix etc and you can have an independant feed form the optical. For example, I can game with the audio coming out of my headphones and have music streaming from Qobuz through the optical out independantly.

Q: Is the driver from creative compatible with secure boot for this sound card? i.e. not just ev+sha-1 signed?

I don't see why it wouldn't be. I've been using SB Z, SB AE-5 and now SB AE-9 on Windows 10 with SecureBoot always enabled and I never had problems.

Q: What's the difference between the plus and normal version?

Sound Blaster AE-5 Plus also has Dolby Digital Live (DDL) and DTS Encoding so you can output digital surround signal to a compatible receiver/decoder that supports DDL or DTS decoding. Basically it gives you ability to output a surround sound through a single cable to the receiver/decoder which then decodes the digital surround signal and plays it on whatever number of surround speakers you have on it accurately in exact way it was meant to be played (for example 3D audio positioning from a game). If it's 5.1 you'd otherwise need at least 3 cables, with digital it can be just 1. If you only use analog output or analog stereo connection to some other device or speakers, this real-time (live) digital encoding won't do anything useful for you.
