So simple - 4 Fast ethernet switch ports powered by USB - perfect for a field engineer.
Compact, USB powered or use a mains adaptor, 10/100 Auto switch, really handy for connecting between a device and real network switch when wire sharking, setting IP on devices, cameras etc or SNMP debugging.I've bought one for all my Engineering team and a few spares - I've even been giving them to clients Engineers as once seen they are much coveted!

Enables a modern laptop, without Ethernet port, to use a wired network easily.
This was bought for my son who is at University and obviously during lockdown is spending a large amount of his time on line learning.Initially we set up his laptop and Xbox connected to his halls of residence WiFi, which at a first pass worked OK. He then reported that sometimes during the day the Xbox was very laggy and hard to play as WiFi is the weak link. So he got an Ethernet lead and plugged the Xbox into the RJ45 in his room and bingo Xbox fully playable all the time. Result. However he reported the at certain times of the day the online video lectures were very blotchy, laggy and hard to see finer details, especially as he is doing engineering and they are demonstrating engineering type things. Unfortunately being a modern laptop (Dell Inspiron) it only comes with USB-C ports, no Ethernet connections like most "older" laptops. What was needed was a USB to Ethernet adapter, as well as an Ethernet switch, so that he could plug both his laptop and Xbox into the wired Ethernet at the same time. Initially I was looking at a USB-C to Ethernet adapter and an Ethernet switch, which would work, not cheap, and quite a lot of cable fiddling required. Then I found this USB 3.1 to 4-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch which solves the problem all in one device and is an acceptable price. So ordered, along with another Ethernet lead which and arrived promptly at his Uni address. His laptop connects to an external monitor (Dell 21" monitor) via USB-C and the monitor contains a USB hub providing 2 USB-3.1 and 2 USB 2 connections. So, he plugged the USB 3.1 to 4-Port Gigabit Ethernet Switch into the monitors USB3 port (all nicely behind the monitor), plugged in Xbox Ethernet lead and Ethernet lead to room RJ45. Plugged in USB C to laptop, the laptop paused a second or two then reported now connected via wired network. Task manager confirmed there was now network traffic over Ethernet connection. So now he reports absolutely no issues with on line video lectures, audio and picture are perfectly acceptable, file download is incredibly fast all the time. Result. So basically, in his case, really boring, plugged it, Windows 10 drivers clearly already built in, it just worked, no issues. He is well pleased, as Xbox works fine through it and much more importantly on line lectures are much better as well a greatly improved speed connecting to the Uni's cloud service. Excellent bargain, "does exactly what it says on tin", well recommended.

Handy device
I bought this so that I could connect multiple devices to a single network uplink without requiring an extra power socket for a normal switch. This device, being USB powered, avoids that. The USB ethernet adapter built into this is based on the ASIX 88179 chip, which is well supported by Linux and FreeBSD. I haven't tested it with Windows yet.
