are the wipes warm and damp? Or warm and dry?

Warm and damp if they start out damp. We use cloth wipes and we haven't had an issue with them drying out. If you don't have the antibacterial pad in the bottom, sometimes the last wipe will be dry. I just add a little bit of water to the warmer before adding my cloth, predampened wipes and I don't have any issues.

Can you use this without the pillow? If not, how long will the pillow last?

I've never used the pillow. I use flannel wipes in mine. I empty and unplug mine every night to dry out (the cord gets really hot...makes me nervous to leave it on overnight. Plus the light on the front is super bright).

How long does it stay warm after you unplug it ?

Not very long. Maybe an hour. Basically without being on it will return to room temperature or cooler because of the moisture. We do usually unplug when going out of town and try and leave empty. Sometimes my son just can't have the luxury of warm wipes. For example when we're on the go he gets a few spritzes of our homemade solution and dry wipes. For longer vacations we'll take a reusable wipes container, fill with wipes and our solution and use them cold. He doesn't complain too much. My son always appreciates coming home to his warm wipes. It's a good system! Hope this helps!

I'm seeing a pink stain on the pillow sometimes. What is that? Mildew? Can that be prevented?

The pink is a mold. I noticed it on the pad, as well, though my cloth wipes never became moldy. I used the pad for 18 months (oops!) rinsing every 3-4 days, and wipes used a solution of filtered water (2 cups warm), coconut oil (Tbsp), and tea tree (few drops) and lavender (drop or two) essential oils - very effective combo that never dried or irritated the skin. Mine held about 25 of the thin, cotton wipes we used, which lasted about 3-4 days. Just threw them in the cloth diaper pale after use. East peasy - loved the entire set up.
