Caravaggio-Such a treat!
This book is pure visual drama. Every page slaps you with shadows, blood, and raw emotion—the man didn’t paint, he provoked. Taschen nailed it with killer print quality and commentary that doesn’t bore you to death. If you want to feel something deep, dark, and delicious, this is your bible.

Pages and pages of this famous artist’s paintings!
I have always loved Caravaggio’s work, and this beautifully printed book didn’t disappoint! The man may have been a bit of a bad-tempered nut job, but his talent for painting people and objects using the play of light and dark known as chiaroscuro (a technique first used by da Vinci) made him one of the world’s most famous painters. If you want to know more about his turbulent life, read “Caravaggio, A Life” by Helen Langdon, or any of the other biographies about him.

Excellent scholarly study of Caravaggio’s work
Very informative survey of Caravaggio’s work, his influences, techniques, and the meanings encoded in his paintings. Probably not a book for those new to Caravaggio, given its wealth of detail and its high academic style. Fine reproductions despite the smaller format of this book. Caravaggio’s eventful life is covered, although the author is critical of the many unverified and sensational stories about him. He dismisses the widespread assumption of the painter’s bisexuality, despite contemporary rumors, his long residence with the ephebophile Cardinal del Monte, and the many sensual youths depicted in his work. The translation is generally clear, with occasional non-English locutions.

An art lovers’ dream. It is good to see that beautifully made and composed books is not a lost art.
This book is a treasure for anyone who is a bibliophile, or interested in the life and work of Caravaggio as a student, a lover of art history, or all four. The illustrations in this volume are all new, which makes it instantly worth having as you will not see this quality and persecutive of photography in any other publication on the work of this artist. The history of the artist and his work is brilliantly presented and researched: this is a treasure trove of information. The volume is beautifully made and organised so that it functions as a wonderful biography and as a catalogue of a complete retrospective of the art of Caravaggio. As a book, it is a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Taschen.

A visually well done book, personally would get the bigger edition
This book is visually very pretty and well assembled... And the biographical information that I've thumbed through so far seems interesting and has made me want to read it which I don't always feel that way about some artist coffee table booksThey have nice blowups of scenes from Caravaggio's work...But I'm a little torn on the book's overall size.. it was a little smaller than I expected it to be. I feel like if you want a biography on Caravaggio alongside his work that is easier to hold and read, this book is prob a good choice for you versus a true coffee table sized book.If you're looking for a larger sized coffee table volume that really shows off his works as a whole, this might not be it. This version would be good for someone on a budget or someone who wants a more portable version. His work is so good and it’s showcased so well, would get the XL edition if you want a showcase of his work
