Make sure your computer is compatible, and the magnetic plug is oriented Correctly. Works great!!
Works great. No fuss. Make sure your computer is compatible and NOTE the magnetic plug must be inserted into the surface in the correct orientation, with the cable towards the front of the computer. I have two 36" monitors plugged into the HD ports and also a mouse, keyboard and two external drives plugged into a USB hub plugged into the dock. Everything works correctly. I still have 3 USB 3/C ports left on the dock and two on the laptop, not counting those on the hub. The dock is compact but feels solid.

Worth the effor
I am not a tech-savvy person (better with internal combustion engines) and struggled for some time to sort out how I could have a second screen/monitor while using my tablet. I was looking in all the wrong places as my research kept leading me to 'screen extenders'. My daughter suggested a 'docking station'. I came upon this item and it could not have been easier to get my spare monitor/TV, with HDMI ability, to be that 2nd screen. I also use a wireless mouse which requires a USB adaptor as my tablet not only does not have a standard 2.0 USB port, but the mouse 'thingy' also is not a 2.0 USB; something like 2.6; I don't know. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy this was to start using. I would recommend it for similar needs.

Broke down in less than a year of use
So I had this working in my classroom and after 10 months the USB a and c stopped working along with the ethernet plug.Tried all the troubleshooting but no USB works in the unit at all. When plugged directly into computer all work when I plug in my old Microsoft dock I have at home it connects the same way to the surface and the usb works fine.

Cost Effective Product to add a docking station to your Surface Pro8
Docking station works terrifically well - perfect for remote work using a larger screen or just adding a second larger screen at minimal cost and having all the other hub opportunities

Poor Build Quality
The ports work as indented but the USB type C plugs that plug into the Surface start slightly coming out of the plastic casing leaving it to be very flimsy and not well seated when connected to the surface. I noticed this less than a week after owning it.

HDMI yes, DisplayPort no...
The media could not be loaded. My situation is a bit unique, I use a Samsung 49" monitor and for some reason HDMI ports can't figure out how to make the resolution work. The only solution I could find online was to use the DisplayPort instead, the way it works is to use the display port adapter on the monitor and connect to the USB-C port on the laptop.I have a Surface Laptop 4, which for some reason only has three input/output jacks 1-USB, 1-USB C, and the Microsoft proprietary magnetic surface dock. Not very well thought out for a work pc, I have SEVERAL external devices I need to connect (external monitor, upgraded camera, Plantronics headphone, speakers, external drive, keyboard/mouse, etc.), so needless to say I needed something that could expand the inputs to accommodate all of my devices.I was SOOO excited when it came, the box was perfect with multiple inputs and for a minute it looked like EVERYTHING would connect through the proprietary magnetic surface dock. NOPE.Because the DisplayPort comes in to the box on a USB-C cable, it competes with more traditional USB-C & USB devices (mouse/keyboard, camera, headset) and effectively none of them work. When I disconnected the devices the video worked, when I disconnected the monitor the devices worked, but not together. I was able to get the video to (sort of) work by plugging it into the HDMI port, but the resolution issue resurfaced again. My solution was to run all traditional devices through the docking station, and use the (now unused) USB-C port on my laptop for the monitor connection. It's not PERFECT, but I am able to connect all of my devices and the monitor works. To be fair, and why I'm only downgrading 1 star because of this issue, if you use the traditional HDMI port for your monitor, you likely will not experience the issue I did.Ok, the 2nd star...the magnetic dock is BARELY magnetic. At least once a day I accidentally disconnect it with the slightest nudge to the PC, and BTW the cable ONLY fits one way so the excess cable has to be in the workspace. Also, it's not like Apple's magnetic adapter where it snaps back into place when you get it close to the port, you have to align in perfectly. Not ideal during a conference call...
