Impairment of the equilibrium during tempering; physical damage, thermal shock alone or in combination can cause destruction even at a later point in time. The “damage” causing the loss of structural integrity need not be obvious to the naked eye. I have personally broken side glass with strong, repeated blows with a regular hammer and have broken side glass standing 5-6 feet away without personally hitting it.
