Q: Can the contacts be stacked?

Absolutely! Simply get a few additional contact blocks and stack them to the rear of the contact blocks. Typically, stacks of up to 3 or 4 deep work perfectly fine. Also, you may attach anything you want to the heads of the contact block retainer bolts,- the thread is M4x0.7

Q: I don't understand how all these 10A switches are used for 30A+ heaters - are they switching off just the controller and not the heater itself?

Through the plc, a relay rated for the current or motor start controller. Think about your starter in your car or headlight switch. same concept

Q: Why use this type switch instead of a toggle switch? I see toggle switches rated for 20A instead of 10A.

These selector switches are designed for an industrial control operation and usually aren’t switching high current loads.
