One of best written books that I have read. Scholarship and sensitivity is obvious in every elegantly written chapter. The description of the life of the people, the nature of the cities and the different currents underlying events makes this a work of rare quality

Beginning from the beginning is the beginning of understanding. In this age when the entire Arab world is on the boil, it's imperative to lay hands on an authoritative work that can guide you through the alleys of history of the Mohemmadan world. While there are many books offering help, this book, with its lucid style and jargon free academic tinge has impressed me no end. Must read for those having an interest in history, mandatory for students and necessary for journalists.

The one with forward from Edward Said was better.
