Their reputation as cobweb-annihilators is well deserved. Here they turn their attention to the romantic 20th century with Ravel and Musorgsky. And how! The bird calls of violin and flute in Ravel’s Ma Mère L’Oye are so life-like, so outstanding that, sitting outside a Salzburg Café on first listening, I looked about me in astonishment before realizing the feathery friend’s chirp came out of my headphones. Ravel’s instrumentation, fantastical and imaginative, comes to the fore like I have rarely heard on record, both here and in the accompanying Pictures at an Exhibition, which are light and colorful in a hitherto-unheard-of way and all the more smashing for it, when it counts. The woodwind work throughout is astounding; the delicacy and transparency of brass and strings overwhelming. The CD is worth, perhaps even necessary, to hear with quality equipment to let the recording work to this breathtaking effect. This Mother Goose is a wonder, the Pictures, now my co-favorite Pictures alongside the completely different Celibidache (Warner, ex-EMI), a revelation.

Diese Aufnahme ist grandios. Ich wurde auf sie aufmerksam, durch einen Beitrag als CD der Woche bei NDR Info und NDR Kultur. Den Beitrag kann man auch im Internet nachhören. Bisher war für mich die Living Stereo Aufnahme das Maß aller Dinge. Die Einspielung unter Fritz Reiner und dem Chicago Symphony Orchester aus dem Jahr 1958 setzt Maßstäbe. Jetzt gibt es eine neue Aufnahme auf historischen Instrumenten, die mit der vom alten Fritz auf absoluter Augenhöhe ist. Den Tempi hat van Innerseel etwas schneller gewählt. Aber Ausdrucksstärke, Klangfarben Reichtum, räumliche Darstellung, all das ist bei dieser neuen Aufnahme einfach wunderbar und schön gekungen. Wer an die alte Vinylausgabe mit Fritz Rainer nicht mehr zu einem vernünftigen Preis rankommt oder einfach keinen Plattenspieler mehr hat, der wird mit dieser Aufnahme sicherlich glücklich. Ich kann sie jedem empfehlen, da sie nicht nur interpretatorisch und technisch gut gemacht ist, nein auch die Freunde audiophiler Aufnahmen kommen hier ganz vorzüglich auf Ihre kosten.

Mussorgsky (well Ravel actually I suppose as it is his orchestration!) on period instruments? Yes, I wondered too if we were not taking this a bit too far forward into the early 20th century. But I saw a review and listened to samples on MP3 and really thought it worth having the full CD. And I don't regret it. It really is a refreshing performance of this well known piece. This orchestra are doing some fine things. I have their Beethoven Symphonies and Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique and will certainly be buying more or their work in future.

Superb performance and brilliantly engineered recording

Zuerst muss ich hier mal meinen Ärger über Rezensionen loswerden, die sich nur auf Downloadprobleme oder den eigenen Geschmack bei Verpackungen beziehen: Diese sind absolut fehl am Platze, wenn es um die Bewertung von Musik geht!!!!! Also konzentriere ich mich auf das Hörbare und berichte von dem überwältigenden Klangfarbensprektrum, das diese Aufnahme vermittelt. Ich war fasziniert von der Lebendigkeit der Interpretation und habe musikalische Details wahrnehmen können, die ich zuvor noch nie entdeckt hatte (obwohl ich diese Werke sehr oft von anderen Orchestern gehört habe). Der intensive und lebendige Zugriff Jos van Immerseels fesselt den Hörer, und diese Interpretation ist absolut schlüssig. Für mich momentan die beste Aufnahme!
