It has a button that you push until it clicks to turn on. You push the same but until it clicks and then it will turn off

Sorry that happened. We purchased the same item and it is marked made in Camillus NY and seems to be working fine. Sounds like knockoff product was sent.

how do you know when it detects a ghost?

This detects anomalies in the Electromagnetic Field..so if you're in an old house or building with no power connected to it & your meter, lights up, you've had your first encounter..the more lights that light up the stronger the presence! Have fun! I have with mine!
