My son will be 4 soon and I thought about getting this for him for his birthday? Do you think this will be too big for him? Should I wait a year?

I had gotten it for my granddaughter who is 12 years old. Being 3, soon to be 4 years old, he might get bored real fast should he not find anything right away. I would wait until he gets a little older so that he can appreciate the 'treasures' that he finds under the ground.

Is the sound annoying? Is the volume adjustable? I'm worried that without an earpiece my 8 year old will annoy other beach goers with nonstop use.

Honestly I'd have to say the sound is kind of annoying if you hear it over & over but it only makes a noise when they find something. The volume isn't adjustable & I don't think there is a spot to plug headphones in. We have 2 & people are more interested in what our boys find than how annoying the noise is lol hope this helps :)

will it detect silver, nickel, and copper? can you tell the difference between junk and silver?

It does detect the various metals. The way to distinguish between a pop-top and coin is with the sensitivity adjustment. It's not 100% but you can seed out much of the junk in the ground.

What type of batteries and how many are required?

On the site where this is listed....on the far left corner (near bottom) where link to of items included, it does say it takes 2 7V batteries. I was also checking the larger model, the TK4, which is $80.00 , and wish had gotten that one. It too, take 2 7V batteries. No matter, the kids are having a great time with it. Super for beach combing, but great for around the home. The kids love to scan the parking lots ! They always find something ! (and they don't dig up your yard !)
