Q: Can you remove the back metal hook part and just use the suction? I have a small sink and I want to affix it to my backsplash.

Yes, the hook can be removed, but honestly the suction cups are the worste part of this product. Cannot get them to stay stuck to anything.

Q: Is the opening wide enough to hold dish soap or hand soap?

It probably won't hold whatever liquid dish soap, but it will accommodate any bar soap. Internal dimensions are (w)6.5"x(d)1.75"x(h)3"

Q: Does the hanger come off if we want it to? The suctions cups will be sufficient.

Yes absolutely. I've been using this for years w/o the hanger. I have a stainless steel sink and the suction cup do a good job holding it up. Try rubbing very little oil/petroleum jelly onto clean suction cups before sticking them.

Q: Is there a drain at the bottom, or does it collect water?

The whole bottom is a drain including the round brush holder. The sponge holder lifts out for easy cleaning. I have no standing water in the bottom.
