UNCANNY X-FORCE BY RICK REMENDER: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION VOL. 1

Yes, it's a classic
Uncanny X-Force receives such universal acclaim that I went into it preparing to be underwhelmed - how can anything live up to that much hype? Thankfully, it does. Almost every arc is a page-turner. The opening "Apocalypse Solution" showcases why Remender's vision for X-Force is so on-point. They're not just a slightly edgier team of X-Men as in the past - they're a black ops team of killers. In their first mission, they go to kill young Apocalypse before he can grow to adulthood. They face a gruesome new Four Horsemen and are nearly slaughtered in the process. But of course, "The Dark Angel Saga," is the real classic here. Angel turns evil, and only X-Force can stop him - by going to the Age of Apocalypse. Wolverine has to face alternate versions of himself and Jean Grey. Psylocke has to grapple with whether she and Angel ever really loved each other. And Phantomex is completely elevated as a character as he struggles with questions of love and pre-determination. And Deadpool gets to be hilarious while also sacrificing himself for the greater good.Art from the likes of Esad Ribic and Jerome Opeña is a perfect match, portraying the action in a clean, exciting way, while somehow also conveying the dark grittiness of the story world. There's a green/blue/neon pink color palette throughout all the issues that helps to make everything feel cohesive - and again adds to that gritty, almost cyberpunk feel.Easily one of the best X-Men stories ever - I'd rank it just behind OG Claremont stuff and Grant Morrison's New X-Men.

One of the best X-Men stories ever!
I read most of these issues shortly after they came out, but as one package this is one of the greatest X-Men sagas ever! It's definitely on the dark/violent side of the superhero comic spectrum, but in a very thoughtful way. The violence has a real point and is not gratuitous or exploitative. Lots has been written about the Dark Angel Saga (the second half of this book, though it follows closely from the first half), but a quick rundown of some of the virtues of this book:-Characters are really well developed and well-written. They all are well defined and act in character, with distinct voices.-It has the quintessential story of fighting against hopeless odds and heroes succeeding right when it seems all hope is lost. But not only does it do this really well, with a gripping fast-paced story, but also pulls the rug out so even after they do overcome the odds and win, you see it's only with terrible sacrifice on the part of the heroes.-The art is fantastic. There are a few different artists, but all create evocative wild sci-fi settings, draw great action, and the colorists keep good continuity between them so it feels cohesive.-The book gets grim, but there's always a little humor. I've never been a big Deadpool fan, but he lightens things up while being deeper than mere comic relief.-It builds wonderfully on old X-Men continuity, especially the Age of Apocalypse, but is quite understandable without having read a lot of the back catalog.Overall this is a really strong book. I had already read the issues before I bought the paperback, but when I got it I found myself reading it over again and being completely gripped by the story again. This is one that won't get old.

The X-Men, like you never seen them before.
While I've always been familiar with the X-Men I had only been vaguely aware of Uncanny X-Men. I just figured it for another one of Marvel's empty titles. Boy was I wrong. All the characters are well written. I still can't pick out a favorite one. The artwork is amazing but I come to expect nothing less in that department. The stories are compelling and the main characters are pretty well fleshed out by this point. I probably should have started at the beginning of Uncanny X-Force's run by this volume came highly recommended to me. These characters are tested in ways we have never seen before and show sides of themselves we didn't even know existed. I never would have imagined Dead Pool, as the group's moral center. But it plays well within the theme of the story. There means may not always be moral but their intentions are pure. The do what needs to be done to insure that Professor Xavier's dream on peace coexistence between man and mutant survives. Sometimes bad things need doing and that's were Uncanny X-Force comes in. It's dark, there's little to no happy feel good moments but a great story never the less. I'm definitely going to order Vol 2 of Rick Remender's but I first want to go back and order the first two volumes of Uncanny X-Force, before the Rick Reminder run.

The Best Marvel Saga from the past 20
Unlike DC, Marvel doesn't have a long list of definitive superhero stories. There's no "Dark Knight Returns" or "Watchmen" from Marvel. There are long, critically acclaimed runs (and Uncanny X-Force arguably meets that criteria), but not a whole lot of self-contained stories with a definitive beginning, middle, and end, free of crossovers and inter-title continuity.Uncanny X-Force, for me, is the closest Marvel has come in the past 20 years. Specifically this collection. Don't read the second. It's not bad, but it's not great either, and unravels some things that the first collection gets right. I'm sure you'll love this one enough that your curiosity will overwhelm you and you'll read the second, and you'll be disappointed.Uncanny X-Force seemingly picks up the strings of characters and story arcs used, abused, and abandoned in the '90s, and makes them work this time out. They all have purpose for their inclusion. There are running themes throughout all 20 issues. The series is actually about ideas such as good and evil, nature versus nurture, redemption, all the good stuff, but explored meaningfully, not tacked on as a cheesy epilogue speech.
