Lovely narrative, but if you're looking for memoir, this isn't one
A lovely little story, and lovely for teaching first person narrative. However, if you're looking for mentor texts for teaching memoir, this is *not* a memoir. Although it's based on a real experience from the author's life, at no point does she stand outside the experience and reflect back on it and what it meant to her. I'm happy to have the book in my classroom, but I won't be using it in my memoir unit.

A Great Way to Teach the Heritage
I enjoyed reading this story, and I am not even the audience it is aimed at. (I'm an adult with no Latino heritage.) I highly recommend it, especially for Latino children who want to learn about their language and their heritage.

Great, great book
This author writes THE BEST books for sharing with students who have recently transitioned from one country to another. I use it with my newcomers and we all enjoy and take comfort for Amada's experiences!
