Logan 350-1 Compact Elite Mat Cutter

For someone who has never attempted to frame anything with matte boards, I was concerned that this would be a difficult and complicated task. However, I just couldn't accept the fee that Hobby lobby and Michaels wanted to charge to frame a project of mine (I wanted 2 different colored matte boards and the project amounted to $200). Once I got the tool, I familiarized myself with it, however, I should have spent more time doing practice cuts to get a more accurate feel for where the cuts are done. My first project had a few glitches, however to save $200 for one project, it was definitely acceptable. My second project looks better than the first and I am now on my third project. Needless to say, now that I have it figured out, the projects look almost as good as professionally done. If I had taken my 3 projects to one of those places, I would be out $600, but because of this tool, I have only spent about $300 (including matte boards and other miscellaneous tools). It is quite simple to do and well worth the effort. Just make sure to change out your blades once dull and to buy the matte boards in bulk if you plan on doing several projects, it is cheaper. It is also easier to buy the matte boards according to the size of frame you want to use, it makes the entire process easier.

Great mat cutter. I had an older version of this for years and all my mats were turning out crooked. I wasted so much time and money on illustration board, I thought there was something wrong with me! So I got rid of it and got this one. I love it, and all my mats have been turning out perfect

Impressive performance at an Impressive price

I’m happy with the product. I was using a straightedge and a razor-knife to cut mat board. This method is quicker, easier, and more accurate. I have had a couple issue with cuts being slightly off line but nothing that’d be a dealbreaker.

I cut perfect mats right out of the box. The cutter was perfectly calibrated and easy to assemble. I used the straight cutter to trim the matboard and bevel cutter to cut the opening. I also cut the mounting board to size. Looks great on my watercolors. There are several YouTube tutorials available for this model if you are new to cutting mats. I had a gallery and custom framing business for years and do have experience, this cutter cuts as well as my very large 60” professional (heavy, not portable) cutter. Perfect for my own artwork. And very portable. Highly recommend.

This is a huge improvement over the old hand held matt cutter I’ve had for over 50 years. Except for the too short fence used when cutting down the matt board to size, everything else is very accurate. Based on recommendations I saw on line, I used a paper towel to apply a dry lubricant to the fence’s cutter guide channel. This produced a big improvement. It also did a great job cutting foam board, generating a much smoother cut than a utility knife. Overall, this is a great system at a reasonable price. It will probably pay for itself with reduced material wasted.

I had never used a mat cutter before so I found it quite intimidating at first. Made mistakes. Got frustrated. But once you master the measurement portion of the operation, the machine itself is somewhat easy to operate. I have to say I had to figure out some “quirks”. 1. Buy one or two mat sheets just to practice 2. Get a good supply of blades My first successful mat projects brought me pleasure and a sense of accomplishment. I recommend this tool.

UPDATE: After purchasing blades, I was able to use the mat cutter, and it definitely works pretty well and will be something I'll be using regularly while I mat and frame my own artwork. I would recommend even for beginners. Everything looks complete, but unfortunately, I am missing one of the most important pieces: blades. The box states that it is supposed to come with "5 blades, #270," but they were not included in with the mat cutter... so, once I have blades, I'll update my review...

We pondered a long time over this (particularly as the UK price is so much more than the US so we were tempted to wait til our next trip to get one there) - almost gave it 4* as a result but the item is so good that we stuck to 5*. But it really does the job well. We have had it for a few weeks and cut about 50 mounts ranging from 4"x6" to just about A2 and it has been great. We've only really messed up one mount - we found the trick is to slightly (about <0.5mm) overcut the bevel cuts. Once you have the hang of it a mount can be cut in a couple of minutes. They look perfect. The actual device seems ok - we are treating it with care as it looks easily damaged but so far so good. We bought (too many!) additional blades - we are finding that we have only used 2 so far (and really they could have been used longer). Another 50'ish mounts and it would have paid for itself and it is so convenient to be able to cut a mount as needed. (We are using Daler Rowney mount board).

After practicing on a small piece of matboard, I was able to tackle a project and it worked perfectly. I only made one mistake as I was cutting out 3 openings in a 16x20 board but was able to fix it (need to ensure that board is rotated for each cut, not just move along from one side to the opposite side or the bevel will be reversed). It is much easier to use with the stops and they are easy to adjust.
