Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip

My older brother had this recorded on a VHS tape years ago. Though I was too young to watch it I would sneak downstairs after bedtime and watch things I shouldn't, and this was one of 'em. The other things were horror movies. Kept me up for weeks. Still Richard Pryor's stand-up is funny and enjoyable and needs to be watched by a responsible person.

After recovering from accidentally setting himself on fire while smoking crack, Richard Pryor returned to the stage at the top of his game. This is truly his finest performance. He even makes a joke about his accident. Ranchy, nasty, and witty as hell, this is the master comedian doing what he does best. If you are easily offended, too uptight, or 'born again', this is not the concert movie for you! Nobody gets away from being made fun of, especially white people! It is truly amazing to watch Pryor slip in and out of his countless characters. His genious plays out with ease and he improvs alot of the show. Seamless bits go by and you're so busy laughing, you may miss the next one. Pryor even brings out his famous friend 'Mudbone' for a full 15 minutes. All of the younger comics working today owe one to Pryor. Eddie Murphy looked up to him as an idol and even used the same song for his end credits in 'Raw'. A comic I knew stopped doing standup and went into film instead. When I asked him why he did, his answer was simple: 'If I can't be as funny as Richard Pryor, then forget it.'

What’s happened to stand up? Yes, Chris Rock, etc, are funny comedians, but they lack the honest vulnerability Richard had. At times you didn’t know weather to laugh or cry watching this. He was a remarkable talent. A true American treasure.

Hes the greatest. Cool to relive those days. The issues that existed. He was a Comedian before his time!!!

There are only a handful of standup comedians that can make laugh that hard , deep kind of laughter coming from your gut. Robin Williams is one of them. The other is Richard pryor.

This is Richard Pryor at his absolute peak. Brilliant storyteller, sharp observationalist and hilariously funny. When I saw this in the movies many years ago, I got stomach cramps from laughing so hard and missed the next three funny lines. The audience was convulsed too. Lenny Bruce, George Carlin, Pryor and Dangerfield are my Mt. Rushmore of stand-up comics.

What’s not to like? Pryor is the Beatles of comedy. And Sunset Strip is like Abbey Rd.
