It's a great book, don't get me wrong. It's just that this particular product is not in English. At least, not in English from the seller I ordered from. It's in German. From my limited skills in German, I like the novel, but if you're looking for English, I'd look elsewhere.

Great book. My son read the first book and ultimately wanted the whole series.

Metro hat längst Geschichte geschrieben. Endlich hab ich es auch gelesen. Es gefällt mir sehr gut.Stellenweise drohte die Story ins Fantasy abzudriften, hat aber es aber doch jedesmal vermieden. Insgesamt ist mir das Buch etwas zu kurz gewesen. Natürlich kann man sich das Nachfolgewerk oder einige der anderen Romane im Metro-Universum besorgen. Ich hätte es besser gefunden, wenn Metro 2033 direkt mit der Gesamttiefe aufgewartet hätte. An einigen wenigen Stellen schienen mir fast Teile zu fehlen...Trotz alledem ein hervorragendes und unterhaltsames Buch. Für Postapokalypse-Fans ein Muss!

This book offers everything a good work of science fiction needs: a compelling story, realistic characters, lots of bizarre ideas and even a philosophically touched context.The setting is the metro of Moscow - the refuge of the last surviving humans - years after World War 3.The society described is fragmented - every few stations are a new "state" with its own laws and borders. The tunnels are dangerous and full of mutants, the surface even more. And the hero is out on a mission to save the living humans.(The review is based on the German translation, the English translation will come out autumn 2009.)

I have to agree with the guy who reviewed this before me. I couldn't put this book down. There were times I got spooked a bit reading this in the dark. If I had to pick one word to describe Metro 2033, it would be "immersive." Some of the editing/translating got a little sloppy towards the end, but nothing to ruin the book. I can't wait for the other books to come out in English. Artyom is my new hero.

It would have been a masterpiece if it was ~250-350p long. The first 100p are truly splendid.However, from that point and on, everything seemed to be dragged out. A major slow (and let) down..It is as if there was a page limit to reach.From 250-450 I skipped whole paragraphs at a time, and skimmed through 10s of pages.Pros:-Excellent story/setting, especially if you are into post-apocalyptic scenarios.Cons:-some 200 pages (about 7 chapters) are-in my humble opinion-plainly boring.-The hero is a bit out of place and too dorky for a messiah (spoiler hint :D ). Makes all detailed descriptions (10s of pages) of his views/opinions ..bleak.

Bleh.No. Interesting concept that wasn't used to its fullest.Boring main character - don't care what happens to him or what he has to say and what he thinks.Awful, boring, unengaging language. The dialogue was laughable, the writing all in all was... meh. I don't know how much it is due to the translator but, didn't work at all.Info dumps. While it is necessary to present the metro and the stations and the like it was confusing and not done very well.Too much babbling and rambling of unimportant stuff.I read a few chapters in the beginning and the last chapter and felt that I understood everything and hadn't missed anything. The ending was a tiny bit interesting and food for thoughtsbut just meh.This book had been very hyped and I had expected more.

Had to take a loss on this one, ordered the book didn’t realize it was not an English version, the company would accept a return but it was far to expensive to ship it back to the UK from Canada so I will have to sell it privately

Alles in Allem ist das Buch mal was anderes und hebt sich auch von anderen Endzeitszenarien ab. Man begleitet im Wesentlichen den Hauptprotagonisten Artijom auf seiner Reise durch die russische Metro, die nach einem nicht näher beschriebenem Krieg die letzte Zuflucht der Moskauer Bevölkerung zu sein scheint.Das Buch ist relativ simpel geschrieben, was nicht schlimm ist. Teilweise wird innerhalb der Welt aber so viel zusammengeworfen, dass es leider schon wieder sehr unrealistisch wirkt. Gefühlt hat jede Station ihr eigenes Gesellschaftssystem und eigene Gesinnung. Diese Systeme und ihre Protagonisten werden wiederum relativ stereotyp beschrieben, sodass diese zu Abziehbildern ihrer realen Vorbilder verkommen. Dadurch wirkt der Roman, wie bereits gesagt, oft unglaubwürdig.Leider hat sich der Autor auch wenig Gedanken über das menschliche Überleben an sich gemacht. Nur von Pilzen und Fleisch und zudem ohne Sonnenlicht, kann der Mensch nun mal schlecht leben.Die teilweise übersinnlichen Phänomene und Ereignisse wirken für mich leider auch unpassend, zumal diese nicht nennenswert erklärt werden. Viele Fragen, die man sich als Leser stellt, bleiben offen.Für Nicht-Russen, klingt auch jede Station mehr oder weniger gleich. Auch die Karte am Anfang ist eigentlich nicht nötig, da die Welt der Metro, wie gesagt, relativ zusammenhanglos ist und die Orte der Stationen für die Erzählung, bis auf wenige Ausnahmen, eher unbedeutend sind.Ab und an geht der Autor auch auf Religion und das Christentum ein. Man merkt, dass er sehr religionsskeptisch ist und das mit dieser Erzählung vermitteln will. Dabei kratzt er aber leider nur an der Oberfläche, sodass diese Ausführungen relativ belanglos sind.Auch die äußerliche Beschreibung der einzelnen Stationen hätte man entweder mehr ausschmücken, oder weitgehend weglassen sollen. So wirken die Beschreibungen vieler Stationen auch hier sehr gleich.Das Ende war zudem, zumindest für mich, recht platt und billig. Aber das ist Geschmackssache.Den Roman hätte man wohl auch gut auf der Hälfte der Seiten erzählen können, ohne das nennenswert etwas an der Handlung und der Beschreibung der Welt verloren ginge.Das Buch hebt sich durch das Setting ab und ist einigermaßen spannend erzählt. Man will schon wissen, wie es am Ende ausgeht. Groß Gedanken hat sich der Autor über seine Welt aber nicht gemacht.Kann man lesen, muss man aber nicht. 3 Sterne von mir.
