Walk in the Park: James Hardy, Book 1.5

A short, and rather good, crime story with a gripping plot and credible characterisation.
If you enjoy police procedural stories then I think you may well like Walk in the Park. This novella has surprising depth for a short story (it takes less than a couple of hours to read). Not only do we follow the police investigation into two murders in Regents Park, but we also see these events unfold from the killer's point of view. In addition, the three lead police characters have very distinct and credible personalities. If I have any criticism of this novella it would be that it may have benefited from being a little longer! The ending seemed a little abrupt given all the dramatic events that preceded it.However, overall this novella certainly held my interest throughout and has piqued my interest to read the other, longer, novels by Jay Gill that feature Chief Inspector James Hardy. So if you are looking for a short police procedural crime story to read, then I think you may be pleasantly surprised by 'Walk in the Park'; I certainly was.

Fast Paced
This new character, DCI Hardy, in my opinion is a much more diplomatic, fast-paced Tom Thorne. The plot is straight forward and easy to follow. The depth of characters and getting in the mind of a killer is great knowledge that the author appears to have had some interaction with both guilty persons who have committed the type of crime described as well as victims

It was ok but predictable

Try to read before book two
Wish I realised this book was available before I read book two because I couldn't wait to find out what happens next. But I sort of had to go back a bit first. Still well worth the time and entertaining as ever.

Recommended
For once a story where everything is believable, not any unlikely or impossible events. Well written and well organised plot. As I read these crime stories I am never trying to outguess "who done it", rather I am interested in how the author develops the story and fills in the characters. There is no padding of extreme violence or gratuitous sex in the story. The story does not fall into the pre-set formulas followed by so many crime and detective books. I commend the author for his finesse and highly recommend this book.

Killer in the Park
A profiler's job becomes personal when the killers targets a young woman known to him. Guiding the lead detectives, Hardy is determined to stop a devious and vicious predator. This was a short but entertaining read. Hardy is likable though the killer was not all that well defined. Tge story moves along but ends abruptly. Still held my interest and I would be inclined to read other novels featuring this character.
