Freddie the Fly: Bee On, Buzz Off

Great book for kids who are working on self-control.

What students don't need some help with staying focused and on task?? This story is a very cute (love the bright illustrations) tale of Freddie whose brain is running at top speed. I love all the specific examples of his inattentive mind! The best part of this story is that it provides a genuinely helpful strategy (mentally or verbally repeating directions after you hear them) to help combat and busy buzzy mind. My only complaint about this book is that the pages are very busy, both visually and with wordiness. Students that are most in need of this book need things a little cleaner and more straight forward. Because of this, I think the book would be most effective with upper elementary and in individual or small group sessions.

As an elementary counselor, helping my students focus and stay on task is a daily challenge. Finally, a children's book that addresses this issue in a humorous , helpful, and interesting way. Freddie the Fly Bee On, Buzz off, is full of great tips for kids without preaching to them or being judgmental. I love both the the text and illustrations and will recommend it to colleagues and friends!
