Hollywood hit-piece
A perfect parody of the egotistical and corrupt nature of Hollywood and its celebrities.

Could this be the funniest film ever made?
Can't help laughing even when someone just says the name 'Tropic Thunder'

Great film, loved it.
This film is great. I do not want to start using the word genius, just because someone acts a character in a unique and admittedly brilliant way, but both Tom Cruise's, and in-particular, Robert Downey Jr's performances are inspired. It is worth the price of admission alone just to see Robert Downey Jr bring to life the character of Kirk Lazarus, particularly as Lazarus himself is also playing a character, Staff Sergeant Lincoln Osiris; genius! There, I said it! Downey Jr is the star of the show here, and the film is worth watching for his performance alone. However, the dialogue, scripting and jokes are also great, refreshing, funny and original. The concepts are hilarious and the film moves along at a satisfying pace. The problem with the film, and it does have one, is that the last third is boring. The film works best, and is at its most hilarious, when conversational set pieces are taking place between the different characters. The final third of the film, is just action action action, which just does not translate in to good comedy. It is a real shame, as this film had the potential to be a masterpiece, I really believe it did. Instead, it is just very very good.Tom Cruise's dance routine at the end of the film, make it worth going the distance.

Not one of Ben Stiller's best
I, like many others I am sure, am a huge fan of Ben Stiller. But this was not one of his finest movies, despite the stellar cast.I felt that the plot was a bit too far-fetched. Essentially, a group of actors - one of whom is played by Stiller, whose character, Tugg Speedman, is known from a number of other successful films - are dropped in the jungle. Unbeknown to them, they find themselves in the middle of territory controlled by the 'Flaming Dragon' drugs gang. The actors have replica weapons while the drug gang fire live ammunition. There are a couple of amusing scenes played by Tom Cruise, who shows off some fine dance moves. Another involved Ben Stiller himself, who is humiliated by the child leader of the gang who forces him to play the part of Simple Jack, an educationally challenged character from his films. Robert Downey Jr's performance was quite amusing - although these days would be shouted down for cultural appropriation, racism etc (although that misses the point about the travails of 'method acting').Needless to say, the individual performances were great. But, for me, it did not really connect in the way I had hoped. Maybe I need to watch the film again.

Flawed but brilliant, on the border between cult and mainstream
Although this (the director's cut) was perhaps just a little long, I really enjoyed this film and laughed till I cried in more than one place. But it is a film where you sense that not everyone will like it. Some of the comedy is direct and irresistible: the verbally absurd, like Downey's gibberish Chinese when trying to con the leader of the drug-band or the visual humour of Stiller running along with his "son" stabbing him in the back until Stiller finally throws him off the bridge. But some is conceptual humour: remembering the idea of just what you are watching right now, or registering that the occasionally stupid, trite dialogue is crafted that way parodically. If you are considering getting this film, my advice is stop reading any other review when they mention Tom Cruise. I have noticed that some reviewers describe the nature of his role: for me this is a spoiler! When you finally realise who he was during the credits, this is one of the funniest surprises in the film. The film is also justly well known for the trailers at the start, these are very good, but they are by no means better or even as good as the best moments in the film proper. Its main faults are overlength - a few cuts would have worked wonders (a pity that you can't choose between Director's Cut and Theatre Version, as with so many BDs these days) - and that the opening sequence of the film until they stop rolling is not THAT funny. As parodies go this is not in the league of "Austin Powers", which was much better as dissecting the cliches and idiocies of older Bond movies than this is at sending up war movies. But this film gains extra dimensions through ridiculing the self-importance and pretensions of Hollywood, and this provides much of the best humour. Being vague to try and avoid a spoiler, I'll say one of the funniest bits is when the studio boss does not change his attitude at all after realising his rather large initial misunderstanding.Highly recommended, and the picture and audio quality are very much worthy of Blu-Ray. Enjoy

Klasse Film
Der Film ist einfach Kult. Respektlos, albern und bitterböse. Und zum Schreien komisch. Man sieht den Darstellern den Spaß am Film an. Ich hab ihn mir gekauft, bevor er auf irgendeinem Index landet.

A Must See, along with Team America, World Police- Robert Downey Jr. is terrific playing a black man- I'm surprised that the NAACP didn't create a stink about this one-
