Let's Toon Caricatures

I'm working on designing an 8-session class on caricatures, even though I'm not a Caricaturist. I figure the best way to learn something is to teach it and I'm intending on taking the class (doing all the exercises and practice sessions) with the students. That said, this is the seventh book on caricatures I've studied, and I thought I had examined the best books. I took a chance on this one, and it is absolutely one of the best out there. It is written clearly, in a concise and comical way, and it has lots of pictures and lots of instruction with suggestions to improve your art. It's all in the author's style, and there are different and unique ideas to emulate. It's easy to understand. The only drawback is it is entirely in black and white. Color would have been desirable, and while the book would benefit anyone who wants to advance their caricature art, maybe black and white is the best way to learn for beginners. It's really quite delightful.

I received this book today. It's concise and easy to read. I like the comic book style that it is written in. On a serious note, there are many, I repeat, MANY easy to follow, well developed examples about how to draw the face, body, background, words, etc. He also succinctly explains what you should focus on for the different areas that you draw. You will be entertained and informed at the same time! I shared some of the examples with my mother and other family members tonight. They have no interest in drawing. However, they LOVED the examples in the book! We had a good chuckle, and a few, "awes" as I leafed through the pages. I shared good quality time with my family because of this book. Trust me...you'll have a smile plastered on your face everytime you look inside this book! You'll be very pleased about the quality of instruction. The letter fonts are large and easy to read. Yes...I'm an older adult and I like large print! LOL! He uses real photos and examples of how to draw the faces, bodies, and backgrounds. It's EXCELLENT!! It's perfect for us right brained individuals! And, you are only limited by YOUR imagination! It just doesn't get any better than that artistically. I'm going to begin drawing the examples tomorrow! I can't wait to begin having some fun. We have LOTS of photographs for me to practice with. No magazine or newspaper will be safe! All of those faces, bodies, and backgrounds to draw! Fun...fun...fun! Buy the book...now! You'll love it!

This book has been used so much in practice that it has almost completely fallen apart. But, now I am so much better at drawing caricatures. I wouldn't go out and do them professionally yet, but I can see progress. The exercise that has helped me the most is on pages 21-24. I do different faces using the same procedure over and over again for months now and it is paying off. I just finished 5 faces and thought they came out really well (was not paid for them) and it was thanks to this book. There are a few other books out there that have helped with learning this, but this exercise in this book was the easiest one for me.

It was the perfect kind of book I had been looking for!!!! Mr. Keelan Parham is a professional caricature artist and his work looks just like his model....more so then other caricatures I've seen done!!!!!!!! I can already tell by my own drawings...that it has gotten better since I got my book!!!!:) I to love drawing realistic animals but drawing people has always been hard for me...but this book has made the difference!!!.. and if any of you should want to learn how to draw caricatures this is a must for you drawing book collection!!!!!

I purchased Pro Create for my i Pad and wanted to get into the art of Caricature. I've always enjoyed sketching people and have always used the basic steps of starting with shapes to define the person I'm drawing, bit struggled to get the likeness. This book walks you through the sequence of how to draw from different perspectives/views while showing how to emphasize certain features. It includes several headshots top practice drawing. It would be great if they coucld create a version of this book specifically for digital drawing. Love it anyway.

I enjoyed Keelan's book...it covers all the basics you need to know to get started drawing cariatures. I've been drawing caricatures for a number of years, and discovered by trial and error a lot of things that Keelan shares...why drawing the 3/4 view is easier and more expressive than full-face, why to always draw the man first in a couple's caricature, the value of the strong, dark line aroud the main subject and how to simplify hair.Following the guidelines in this book, combined with practicing on a daily basis should provide the beginning caricaturist with results beyond their expectations.

Keelan Parham is one of the most successful retail caricatures working today, and he knows of what he speaks. If your goal is to learn to draw live caricatures in a style that is fun, fast, impressive and eminently sellable, this book is for you.

I didn't read any other caricature book. I'm not a caricaturist per se either, but I can say it definitely expanded the way I draw. more than anything I enhanced my observation skills (facial features and the emotions behind those, if that makes sense). I'm very pleased :) .

This book is great and after going through the book its far more that I expected and it went from great to awesome. Tom's art is awesome and he's a very good teacher to explain how to draw caricatures.. He is very clear and concise . There are lots of brilliant colors illustrations eye shape, nose, mouth, eyebrows and more. Examples from photos to caricature in easy step by step instructions. For those who need step by step help with images and examples this book is full from start to finish. There is so much in this book everything that comes into play for caricature drawing or just fun drawing. There are 127 pages and the moment you open the first page you start with and it is non stop to the end of the book. I am certainly not great in caricature drawing when I started but I can honestly say that there has been a definite improvement after reading and practicing with this book and in time I hope to see my name up with the other great caricature artists or maybe I'll do it just for fun!!
