Great sounds in a small enclosure
This is the second one of these that I have had, and I have always been happy with them. Pioneer has made a quality product for years, and this is no exception.Pros-Compact size-Great sound in a small enclosure (I have it in about .4 cubic feet sealed)-Long lasting (had my first one for 3 years, still going strong)-Don't need a lot of powerCons-Short break in period. Give the sub a couple of weeks to break in-Conventional 10" grills (2 piece) don't fit, and 12" is a bit too bigOverall this is a great sub. I have built a box that is fits in the well of my Jeep and provides a lot of sound for the space. Great product and great specs.

Best shallow mount subs
I've tested a LOT of subs. Deep ones, shallow mounts, 8-30", you name it. I work with sound and I've done a significant amount of acoustic engineering. While I wouldn't say these are the best subs I've ever heard by any means, as far as shallow mount car subs, there are few that compete with these, and those that do are 3-4x the price. I've got them in a 350z I built a custom enclosure for using the roll bar and polycarbonate. These provide deep, clean bass. I advise a very small, sealed box for best performance. My music tastes range from rap to soft acoustic music, and these meet all my needs well. I can feel them bump easily, but also just enjoy the lower bass tones coming from light drumming too. Very good speakers. Excellent design, actually quite aesthetically pleasing as well.

There are better speakers out there...
I've found that MEMPHIS makes a better flat woofer but for the money these Pioneer speakers are okay. Not too much more to get a better brand though.

Great sub
I like this sub. It does hit extremely hard. Very shallow and it appears to be able to handle a lot of watts. Currently running a 300 watt amplifier on it.

Good only while they last.
Purchased two of these for my 2007 Avalanche. Put them in a behind the seat enclosure running on a Punch Prime 500 x1 amp. Sounded great hit great for the last 7 months till couple of days ago amp protection light stayed on. Pulled both speakers out and ohm checked them. One was sitting at 1ohm and the other 2.7 and both smelled like a 4th of July BBQ. Installer said impedance changed on the speakers and burned out the amp. Now begins the process of trying to get them replaced.

They still look and sound great. They are not subwoofer replacements
These have been mounted and installed in my car for over 5 years now. They still look and sound great. They are not subwoofer replacements, but Mid-Bass replacements with a lot more gusto. If you want to impress your neighbors, and set off car alarms, get a dedicated box, and advertise for local law enforcement. If you have a speciality application, like under the seats of a truck, behind a pickup bench, door mount, or space-saving trunk setup, shallow subwoofers are a much welcomed category. My door acts as a sealed box, and the drivers are mounted in the former 8-inch Mid-Bass openings. They're powered by a dedicated amplifier. They have enough power and sound to fill out music in the car. This frees up your other speakers to drive a narrower range, giving you cleaner sound.

Works in small enclosures
Shallow mount subwoofers are becoming very popular because the technology has gotten to the point that they are actually good, not just thin. Shallow mount means that the box it fits into can be quite thin from front to back. In the case of the Pioneer TSSW251 the internal volume can be very small as well. This means the sub can be mounted in more locations, often out of the way and hidden.Note the rear view of the Pioneer sub. It is very unusual and clearly a lot of engineering effort has gone into making these things work. It is not just a flattened out conventional design.I was able to hide it away in a cubby hole and got rid of the big box that used to take up a lot of cargo area, could attract thieves and would probably hit me in the back of the head in a collision.Pioneer has recommended box volumes. Mine is home-made and is below the optimum size, but it still works very nicely, with a lot more bass than the previous traditional long-throw (deep dish) 8" sub in a far bigger box. It is designed for a sealed box, not a ported design.Any decent amp will power it. No need for 1000 watts. I used a 350 watt mono Alpine.I was very pleased with the price. It actually seems inexpensive for what you get.
