Overpriced Brick With Last-Generation Features And Without The Decency To Be Durable
Bottom-line: Unfortunately, given the price, this phone is garbage. I had high hopes when I bought it, but after six months of owning it I am completely underwhelmed with this phone. I do not recommend it.I am not rough on my phones, but I have dropped them in the past. This inevitably leads to cracked screens, misery, heartache, and discontent. I spent a great deal of time researching military-grade smartphones before settling on the Runbo Q5. The phone is indeed feature packed (Android, PTT Radio, laser pointer, flashlight, etc). The main selling point for me was its alleged durability. I liked that it was billed as being waterproof, shockproof, and that it came with the ability to be used as a walkie talkie. These features caused me to overlook the fact that the phone is twice as thick as a conventional smart phone (making it hard to stick in your pocket), and that I was paying a lot of money for last-generation features.Pros:Decent battery life (though it got progressively worse over the time I owned this, even with all of the main draining features turned off)Bluetooth syncs up wellThe laser pointer is fun for playing with the family dog/catThe flashlight feature is hugely handy and puts out a ton of lightIt's hard to misplace, as it's a giant brickThe speaker is loud and clearCall quality is solid: I never experienced a dropped call with this phoneThe camera is pretty decent, and takes good pictures. The processor is solid. The caveat is that I am not a big game player. It was fine for web browsing, messaging, and such though.Cons:The firmware it ships with will need to be upgraded right away. That's more of an issue than it should be, as the Runbo website is not reliable for downloads. It took me several attempts over 3 days to get this to work (even with the phone sitting literally next to our router)The speaker would sometimes stop working (known bug). This requires that you do a battery pull. On a normal phone, no big deal. On this on it entails undoing the six screws on the back of the phoneIn order to use the phone with headphones, you'll need to unlatch the bottom cover. This negates some of the waterproofing properties of the phone. The WiFi can be a little balky. This necessitates frequently rebooting the phone to make it work properly. A minor inconvenience, to be sure, but when you look at how much you're paying for it...The walkie talkie is essentially worthless. I tried it with two separate devices on multiple frequencies and it failed to send or receive with both. Finally, and the biggest, most unforgivable sin: the phone is not durable. It's advertised as coming equipped with Gorilla Glass*. Literally the first and only time I dropped this phone, (from a height of less than three feet) the glass cracked catastrophically. The manufacturer does not cover drops, unintentional or otherwise. It's a ~$250 repair to get the glass fixed.* It is worth noting that Corning does not list Runbo on their list of manufacturers using their product. It's possible that this does come with Gorilla Glass, but I doubt it.http://www.corninggorillaglass.com/en/products-with-gorillaAnyway, caveat emptor. I've made more expensive mistakes in life, but this one still hurts. This review reflects my experience with this phone. Your mileage may vary.
