Night Catch

Personal
I thought that this book was very well written for the little ones and their mommy to read to them during that time. As an ex-Army brat I remember my dad being gone in Vietnam but we did not have books like this.

Amazing book, best one for deployment for 3years old and older
This is working great for us though we have a girl not boy and use a soccer fun instead baseball but it’s easy to substitute details. thanks to book at 3 she understands more about earth and how day night works. Every time before bed time she will blow star to daddy whose deployed and couple more to grandparents leaving far in Europe. It’s nice conversation starter for them too, talking about how many stars they received etc.It can be good for older kids too but I found it is perfect for 3-4 year oldsBook focuses on fun and connectionIt doesn’t addresses fears of deployed parents getting hurt but for this age group that would not be necessary or maybe even harmful as they don’t have those fears yet (as they have limited understanding what military is).

Love!
Love this! We got it about a week ago and my 3 year old son has wanted to read it every night since then. Some military books are kinda sad, but this one is a happy one. It first talks about how dad is leaving and going to the other side of the world but they can still do something fun “together”. They get to play catch with a star. So great to be able to have something unifying to do while dad is gone.

Really Made a Difference
My dear friend gifted our family with this book before my husband deployed for 22 months. We had to make sure we could read through it without crying before we read it with the kids :) It is a touching story and while the pictures recognize that the far off place is a desert, the story does not focus on the war or the soldier as a hero (there are enough books like that). The soldier in the book is a dad and the child he plays catch with is a boy, but both girls and boys of many ages can apply this game of catch in their specific situation. This worked for my boy (6) and my girl (3) who never went to bed without throwing Dad the North Star. I am buying this book for friends who have their dad deploying. When I asked my kids (now 11 and 8) if I could borrow out their book, the thought of parting with it put tears in their eyes and they asked if we could find one online to buy. This book touched our family in a special way.

Fantastic book!
Bough this for my 3yr old because my husband is deploying. The worst thing about this book is trying to get through it without crying, lol. My daughter and I love this book. It is cute, easy, and helps my daughter "normalize" her experience.

Love this book
I was looking for a book to explain the distance of my 3 year old sons father. This book explains it perfectly and makes my son feel connected to his father regardless of the distance around the world.

Perfect deployment book!
This book is precious. It's not about "a boy with a baseball", as one reviewer said; rather, it turns the very simple concept of playing catch (something practically every child would know how to do) into something that can be done with a parent even when they are across the world. I am reading it nightly with my 8-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son (we change words like son/guy/boy to kids/friends so it applies to both kids) during a year long deployment. After the story, we go outside and blow our star to Dad. It's a fun routine for everyone but is especially meaningful to my older child. Staying connected during long absences can be a challenge and I consider this book and our routine with it to be a very helpful tool.
