Is it really stiff to operate for tired old hands with a bit of carpal tunnel Syndrome, or is it easy to find a nice sweet spot and keep it moving?

I would say no it has a thing on the only unit that you slide out that gives you support reaches up towards your mid arm to give you support to hold it with one hand and then you can use your crank for the other I have carpal tunnel I have arthritis and you'll be all right

How wide is the pattern spread?

It is a function of how fast you turn the spreader handle. For me it's about 6 feet wide.

Would I be able to spread my zinnia seeds next spring/summer?

I would think so. Don't know the size of Zinnia seeds but settings provide for pretty big opening for distribution. Have only used it for granular fertilizer and worked very well.
