The Little Book of Snowflakes

Caltech professor of physics Kenneth Libbrecht has put together a beautiful little (5 1/2" sq.) catalog of about 140 photos of snowflakes taken with a specially built microscope fitted camera. Many of these photos are enlarged to full page size and with color added to enhance the awesome complexity and symmetry in the never repeated shapes and patterns.There are many quotations from notables sprinkled throughout the book and one that seems especially appropriate to snowflakes is from Aristotle (384-322 BC): "The Chief Forms Of Beauty Are Order And Symmetry And Definiteness"."Little Snowflakes" is a beautiful companion to Libbrecht's much larger book "The Snowflake--Winter's Secret Beauty" where one will find more photos along with text explaining the physics behind snowflake formation. This is a beautiful book filled with terrific pictures and wonderful quotations. This is a book to be read over and over.

This is a wonderful book for all ages. For 3rd grade and up I combine this with Snowflake Bentley. In Pre-K the pictures of what a snowflake looks like, make my students ask questions, questions, questions. This book is worth its weight in gold for all the curiosity and wonder it brings to my students.

This is a sweet little book to read and look at with your children. There are a few poems and scientific facts that go perfectly with the lovely photographs. We made snowflake ornaments after reading it!

Beautiful little book with photographs of actual snowflakes! Simply amazing to see, even when you know intellectually that each snowflake is different. My preschool class has enjoyed looking at it as well.

This little book was a fascinating look at snowflakes. Most people see snowflakes when they fall, and never think much about them, other than they accumulate on the ground and are pretty when they are falling. This little book makes you look at snowflakes in a whole new light, and really think about how they are formed. The pictures are amazing, and this book is fun to read!

I live in the french alps and all my friends who come along love this little book, when they watch it, they first can't believe it's real photographs of real snowflakes and how magical and infinitely diverse the shapes can be.

i loved this and so did my grandchildren. I have given lots as christmas presents. It is beautiful and also informative.The number of different forms of snow flakes was a real surprise and delight to me
