Is the emotionally disturbed person a victim of forces beyond his awareness, over which he has no control? This is the belief on which neuropsychiatry, psychoanalysis, and behavior therapy are all based. But what if this premise is wrong? What if a person’s psychological difficulties stem from his own erroneous assumptions and faulty concepts of himself and the world? Such a person can be helped to recognize and correct distortions in thinking that cause his emotional disturbance. Now one of the founders of cognitive therapy has written a clear, comprehensive guide to its theory and practice, highlighting such important concepts as: · Learning the meaning of hidden messages · Listening to your automatic thoughts · The role of sadness, anger, and anxiety · Understanding and overcoming phobias and depression · Applying the cognitive system of therapy to specific problems “A book by a significant contributor to our knowledge… immensely readable, logical, and coherent… This is Beck at his best.”— Psychiatry Review: Cognitive therapy by Dr. Erin Beck. - This is the definitive book on cognitive therapy by the person the doctor that the develop that the cognitive theory of behavior in the 50s. good read
Had to read this for class but I thought it was actually intriguing and a nice read. Very informative. I recommend familiarizing yourself with psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and humanistic theories before reading this for a fuller understanding. This book However does a great job summarizing other psychotherapies

I'm Glad I Found This Book through Amazon!
Wonderful and very informative book. I'm glad I purchased it. It helped me to understand CBT. This method of therapy is explained in a way that someone not in the medical field can understand. I purchased the book "used" through Amazon at a reasonable price. Thank you, Amazon!

Interesting and easy to read
Purchased this book to write my thesis and it is excellent. The book is well-written, by the developer of Cognitive Therapy, now Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and is easy to read. Has a lot of foundational principles and has been updated since the first edition.

Wonderful book with many powerful case studies as examples; fascinating reading.
A great book for anyone who has any emotional disorder, or knows someone who does, or who simply finds the subject interesting. The author is a groundbreaking psychotherapist, who compares his premises and beliefs with those of previous schools of therapy. Profound and credible.

Good overview of cognitive therapy and emotional disorders
The book is a good overview of that cognitive therapy is about, but there is too much focus on comparing it to psychoanalysis and behavioral therapy. Also too theoretcial and too scarce in terms of strategies and techniques of relieving emotional distress, which I was expecting. For a professional, it is still worth a read, if not else, to be able to make a more informed decision on whcih type of therapy would be most beneficial for them in terms of deepening their knowledge, on the other hand, not really a good "self-help" book, which I was hoping for. Might be entirely my mistake for picking this one, but I wanted to get a book that was written by the author of the field.
