No, this is not a battery powered gun, you have to "cock" the gun each time you want to shoot. One of the fastest non battery powered guns out there.

Does this gun have slam-fire (the ability to hold down the trigger and pump out rounds?)

yes it has some of the best slam-fire (did not buy this from amazon)

will the darts work in the nerf retailiatior?

Yes, they both fire the blue nerf n-strike elite darts. Also, mine is able to fire the nerf barricade whistler darts and the generic nerf suction cup darts with no modification.
