Cold wax additive for oil paints to give texture with luminosity and a more matte finish
I like Gamblin Cold Wax Medium a bit better than a similar product made by Dorland. I've used both many times, but find myself reaching for the can of Gamblin's version most often. It's fun to experiment with different techniques using the wax mixed into oil colors. Besides giving your brush strokes a more matte finish, the wax also makes it easier to create texture and is helpful in creating an impasto effect if you choose to work the paint that way. Another great benefit is that your paint will dry to the touch MUCH faster. This faster drying time is something to keep in mind if you like to keep 'reworking' in wet paint since the cold wax addition will hamper that.Besides different techniques offering greatly differing results with this product, it's interesting to play around with the amount of wax you mix into your oil paint. In order to reduce the risk of cracking, Gamblin recommends not mixing more than 1/3 wax to 2/3 oil paint. I've found that you can up the wax ratio a bit if you mix some alkyd gel medium in with it which will help make the mixture more flexible.Although a completely different product, technique, and tool-use than those used for encaustics (hot wax) artwork, the addition of cold wax still gives much of that same luminosity, but without the need for heat. And, just as with encaustics, it's best to only use cold wax on rigid supports rather than stretched canvas in order to avoid flexing and cracking.Gamblin Cold Wax Medium is made up of natural beeswax, odorless mineral spirits, and alkyd resin. It’s soft enough that it’s easy to mix into oil paints with a palette knife.

Great for sealing watercolor painted cards.
Very smooth for easy application. Dries clear. Excellent protection for watercolor paintings. Does not alter colors. Best used over quality brand watercolors that don't fade.

I should have read the size
The product works great, but I had a laugh when I received the product because it was tiny. I didn't realize it was so little. Honestly, it's a pricy product but it creates gorgeous results.

strong smell, very viscous, great texture when cured
this cold wax is okay, but not my favorite, Jacquard's cold wax is because theirs doesn't have as strong of an odor. either way you need to use this outdoors. this brand is viscous like crisco. For my usage I wanted something a little stiffer, but this works well still as long as you aren't wanting to do immediate color layering. It cured well but don't set out in too high of heat or it will damage the under layers. even after curing, paintings that had been stored in a very hot dry garage had layers that altered and I had colors change months and months later.

Best cold wax for Oil painting techniques ❤️
I love the buttery, smooth consistency, and the fact that it’s always the same no matter how many can you open. It stays fresh and I love mixing it with the oil paint and getting the texture and opacity that I desire.. Jennifer Wallens’s fine art
