Beautiful drawings.
I guess you would buy this if you were familiar with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright but if you are not and you want to know more about the man and his work then buy one for next year!

A milestone book about FLW - not large enough, though
(about the large paperback edition - the hardcover one being smaller in size)A large, thin, black+white (no gray) book, consisting in a 10-page text by Frank Lloyd Wright, followed by about 100 pages of plans and drawings of his pre-1909 works. This is a facsimile of what is known as the "Wasmuth portfolio" published in 1910 in Germany - therefore the legends in German. Wright's stay in Berlin at that time was, in part, to help finish and promote this publishing among European architects.Since its publishing a collector's item, the original portfolio was 40 x 64 cm (16" x 25") in size. This can be seen in the book, despite its good printing quality, by some hard-to-see, minute details, which make me wish it was even larger.

Beautiful drawings
Great drawings from a great architect. Classic architecture at it's greatest. The only flaw, is that the plans are in German

A sliver of history
I found this book for $4 awhile back and couldn't believe it. I bought 5 and have been giving them out to coworkers as parting gifts. I will likely buy more in the future but hope the price drops again. The book itself is wonderful. A little big and unwieldy, but shrinking it would negatively impact the drawings so it's a fair compromise. Includes a delightful essay in the front by Wright who was a big writer (Wrighter?) though he's not well known for it. He mostly just wrote about himself so that's probably why.The drawings are in German. It's a downside but it's historically accurate. This is a copy of Wright Wasmuth portfolio, which was published in Germany when he ran away to Europe to escape some personal trouble. This event was important - it marked the end of the first part of Wright's career in Chicago; and it introduced his work in a major way to the Modern masters. There's a story that when the portfolio was published, Peter Behren's office took several days off to admire it (including the like of Mies Van Der Rohe and Walter Gropius). So while it's frustrating not being able to read the room names in English, it's a faithful reproduction in that way. (FLW's essay at the front is in English)Overall, even at a higher price I highly recommend picking up one copy for yourself. If you can get cheaper copies they make wonderful presents for anyone you know who is into architecture.
