Zombies....
I loved the flow of this book. By far one of my favorite zombie books ~ will recommend. Just a reminder, this is an extreme horror - graphic in all of its elements! Matt did not disappoint.

Not for the faint of heart..
This is an Extreme Black Cover Novel, while you might enjoy a great zombie movie or book, this one tends to be very graphic with events and situations where violence, sexual situations, or even the sexual nature of some of the characters, with some pretty messed up people tossed in that you would definitely run into if a zombie apocalypse (or any end of the world situation) actually happened.I mean think about it, if the zombie apocalypse were to actually happen tomorrow, it would be more likely that you'd run into a Charles Manson type of person than Mr. Rogers. With that in mind, if you didn't like any of the Saw or Hostel movies, you definitely would NOT want to read this (or any black cover) novel. The extreme warning isn't there for looks, it's there for a very good reason and I would highly recommend you avoid this book because you would be "extremely" offended. That said, if your like me and enjoy gory horror flicks (more than a tame television version of The Walking Dead), then you'd love this book. The horror churns your stomach, freaks you out, you love and hate the various characters, you feel the pain and suffering they experience during times of loss, and you get a detailed description of the situations and surroundings they are forced to endure.Matt Shaw is a master of extreme horror. If you can enjoy a work of art for what it is, are not easily offended by horrible events (some of which relate too closely to reality), can let go enough to enter into the twisted horrors of Matt Shaw's imagination, you would love this book in your own twisted way.

Did I miss something?
It was a good end of the world zombie apocalypse book, and not badly told. The characters were well developed and it moved at a brisk enough pace. Aside from it seeming to be a little short, I liked it.But to be perfectly frank, I must say that it just didn't live up to the "extreme graphic horror" that was promised. Maybe I'm jaded, but there were really only two things at the very end that I think were supposed to be the shockers that would justify the hype. The first was kind of distasteful and the second was a bit of a letdown for me. I felt that the novel lacked bite (sorry about that one). There needed to be several 'oh my god' moments, and there just weren't any. While I certainly will buy more of this author's books, I'm afraid that I'll do so with lowered expectations.

BRAINS...More than just a Zombie story.
I truly enjoyed reading this book. I wasn't sure, because I am not a Zombie person, however, this book concentrates on several survivors as they attempt to fight their way out of the city and harm's way. The people are believable and they are not all together. The story focus involved a father and daughter, psychiatrist and a few of her patients, one patient who escapes her office and their battle for survival. I enjoyed the tension as well as the twists and turns found in the book. WARNING; if you are offended by foul language and descriptions of gory death and people being eaten, this is not the book for you. If you enjoy cutting edge writing and a good storyline, you will not only read this book, but other works of Matt Shaw. I for one will be buying more of his books after the first of the year.

Pretty good zombie book
If you love zombies and quick reads you’ll more than likely enjoy this book. There were a few things I didn’t enjoy but it’s didn’t completely ruin the book for me. But again this book needed an editor. For a in depth review check out Year of the Author on YouTube.

Good, but hardly shocking.
It was interesting. Technically speaking it was a very well written book. The characters were well fleshed out and the plot was such that it was clear what was happening from point to point. Obviously written by a Brit but that's not a bad thing at all, but some readers may be well advised to watch some BBC to get some of the references. Gross? Meh, I've seen stomach contents emptied out of cadavers that were more disgusting that this, but then again, maybe my threshold for gross is MUCH higher than most. I can see this shocking a Grisham reader, but for those of us who read Chuck Palahniuk or J.A. Konrath, we've read much worse.

Great new take on a zombie story
I was hooked from the very first page. I did however expect a little more Gore based on the warning. Mind you there are some pretty graphic and startling parts that are deserving of the warning label.Fast paced new take on the zombie apocalypse telling the story from different characters point of view. The extremes they go to for survival as they try to come to terms with the reality of the new worldLoved this book and would recommend to anyone who loves a good horror story.

Somewhat biased review.
This is a somewhat biased review as I am one of the main characters in the book. As much as I really wanted to enjoy it, I just couldn't suspend my disbelief that people would want to have sex with rotting zombies. I believe it would have been more gruesome and believable if they were capturing living women for that aspect of the story along with the forced fighting. Or even having the living fight the RDFs.... Other than that, it was a typical Matt Shaw horror show. I did enjoy the character of Gina. The authors writing and editing continue to improve.

A morbid take on a zombie outbreak...
Matt Shaw is relatively new on my reading radar. After reading SB, his previous novel, I was morbidly impressed. Here's an author who pushes the boundaries of taste and violence, and seems to enjoy doing it. With passion comes great writing and this is one of the most obvious things I get from Shaw's books. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but there's no doubt the man can write a great horror novel. When I read RDF, I wasn't disappointed either.SB took some normal, everyday taboos and utilised them to great, disgusting effect. Did he offend people? Probably, but he warned them about the content. But surely any horror writer can scribble about incest and cannibalism, right? I mean, some people can jump on the exploitation band wagon just for the sake of it, to cash in on the topic itself. See, with Matt Shaw, I don't think this is the case. True, he uses topics that garner interest for possibly the wrong reasons but they never seem forced or shoved in just for the sake of it. They have a purpose in the story. The reason I say this is simple: RDF has content that people will find offensive. Even I winced at one particular scene which borders on extremely indecent and taboo, particularly in today's society where Facebook and Twitter expose our children to all kinds of terrible people. Incest and cannibalism are out - if you discount the zombies - and racism and human/zombie sex (yep, you heard that right) are in. As well as a few other topics best discovered for yourself. But none of them are forced, all have a place in this story about a particularly nasty zombie outbreak enveloping a town. We get swept up into the utter chaos along with the characters. Now, sure, you're thinking: Zombies? Urgh, not again. Right? It's an easy decision to make since they've been saturated in books and movies in modern times, but Shaw tackles it from a new angle...or multiple angles. After an explosive beginning that has you begging to read more, five characters weave effortlessly as they traverse the new-born apocalypse. All are flawed - Ted in particular, an amazing character, hate-filled and all too real - and just want nothing but to get back to their normal lives (except Ted, a psychotic who revels in the chaos). It's been done before but Shaw writes the characters with mature conviction and social commentary that seems...well, relatable. At times I wanted to punch one character and cheer for another. If this isn't evidence of solid, interesting writing, I don't know what is.Some of the material will have your eyes widening. Some of the content is offensive - and in the UK, these particularly taboos rule the headlines on a daily basis - but it suits the tone of the horror expertly. In a zombie outbreak, nothing would be out of bounds. There would be no law, no justice. Matt ushers in some issues that other films and shows are just to nervous to introduce. It's refreshing to see the rules shattered and the result paints a stark, scary picture of a scenario all too familiar to horror readers.5* - Bold, brazen, gory, boundary pushing - come on, it's Matt Shaw - and quite original considering the concept, RDF is a breath of fresh air. A zombie story with a bit of everything, this book deserves to be read. Shaw has a knack for writing about crumbling societies - as he did with SB - and this lives up to the hype. If the name doesn't hook you, well, you must be dead inside. Great stuff!

Not your Usual Zombie Book.......
I am a huge fan of Matt's books and couldn't wait for the release of RDF after reading some samples of it that Matt posted on facebook.Over the past few months Matt had taken his writing to a whole new level and he seems to be constantly trying to shock the reader which I love. The book started out with a shocking opening scene which the faint hearted should avoid but despite this Matt wrote another fantastic book with a great storyline and fantastic characters which kept me gripped from start to finish and despite having some questionable scenes in it Matt managed to make it humerous and gripping and keep me on the edge of my seat the whole way through.I can't wait for his next book and just wonder how he can possibly top such a great book but I think this everytime and matt always seems to surprise me with his next book. He fits more drama into his novellas than most authors fit into an entire novel.A great read. I can't wait for his next book.

A completely 'fresh' zombie story!
When I first read the synopsis for this book, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy it as much as some of Matt Shaw's other extreme horror. At first, I thought, "Hmm...zombies...they are a bit rinsed out and over done"... but yet again Matt pulls it out of the bag. So,I hold up my hand and state that I stand corrected. I was hooked from the first page! He completely refreshes zombies, which doesn't even sound possible given how rotten they are, but trust me on this one. With this one, Matt writes in such a way that the stories of each character sink their putrid teeth into you and keep you turning the pages. There are a few characters and different lines of story going on but Matt writes very clearly and keeps everything moving well.It is, without a shadow of a doubt, a very gory story (ooh, gory story, say that out loud, it sounds good!).If you are a zombie fan, you need to read this! Likewise, if you like gore and extreme horror, you need to buy this now!

Sick but another excellent book
With every new release we are getting to see a bit more of Matt Shaws disturbed mind which is great news for us that love his books. In this book we meet probably one of his nastiest characters yet, Ted and we discover how he, his shrink and a father deal with the zombie apocalypse. If you think that the zombie subject has been done to death then think again. Matt adds his own twisted ideas to this book which gives us something that sometimes is very extreme and graphic in places but another book that is hard to put down. Just wish it was longer.

A bloody good read
Matt Shaw is relatively new to me and a result of me searching for 'zombie books'. I gotta say, I read the reviews to his books beforehand and the titles alone suggest to me that it's a little darker than what I'm used to reading, but even still I was shocked. Matt Shaw does not care about boundaries but that's what makes his work so amazing. He writes what others cannot and describes it in a way that has you cringing but craving for more. This was a brilliant read, I liked the multiple character POVs which gave us a glimpse into what people need to do in order to survive. His main character Ted was the most shocking of all. There were lines that he delivered that had me laughing slightly at the beginning but as the story progressed and more of Ted's character was revealed I found myself hating him but wanting to know his fate.Overall: an amazing read, one of the best zombie books I've read. Don't underestimate the blood, gore and violence that is involved in this though: if you don't like dark (and I'm talking pitch black) writing then this probably isn't for you. If you wanna be as shocked and enthralled as I (and judging by the reviews many of his other readers) are, then this is for you.I've immediately downloaded his other books and will be reading them promptly!
