Run the Race [DVD]

Best of the best.
This is an incredible coming of age film. If you like gritty middle-American films, this one will hit you right in the heart. From start to finish it captures and captures the heart again. I laughed, cried, and a little of every emotion in between. Oh that there were more films created with this quality. If I could give it 10 stars, I would.

Excellent Christian movie
If you’re looking for quality Christian entertainment, look no further. You have arrived! Produced by Tim Tebow. If his baseball career doesn’t pan out, he has a fall back position. For the first 45 minutes you may think this is “Christianity Lite”. Be not deceived. Wait for it. I won’t spoil it, but you WILL be blessed. Excellent story of 2 young athletic brothers, and the struggles they face, and how God helps them through them. You’ll get angry, you’ll cheer, you’ll cry, and you’ll be encouraged to fight the good fight, finish the course, and “Run The Race” Enough said. Just watch!

Inspirational Story.... But A Depressing Ending
I really thought I was going to like this film- until the ending. The story is about two brothers, Zachary and David, that have really had a rough time in life. They boys were late high school aged and pretty much living on their own, trying to use their athletic talent as a way out of small town life into a successful college career. Their mother died from cancer and their father left from alcoholism secondary to grief leaving them alone with only the help of a Godmother. The film is religious in nature- and the main point was to show how God's love can transform your life even through the darkest of times. The film follows the events of the the brothers' senior year of high school through injury, disappointment, and growth. Zachary is dealt another difficult circumstance when he suffers an ACL tear that interrupts his football career, while David starts to run track (despite his previous head injury). It is a touching story of true grit- these boys kept trying against the worst of situations- and Zachary's story in particular is a coming of age tale where we see him mature into a God loving man that is able to appreciate the lessons life has taught him through the tough times. It is a clean film that is family friendly showing the reality of small time life in America for many people. The shots of the empty buildings in the town were especially poignant. The acting and cinema work were pretty decent for one of these Christian films. What I didn't like about the film, and hence the 3 star rating, was the ending. There was just no reason for the shocking sad ending- which didn't make sense medically or add anything to the story.SPOILER ALERT*** so if you don't want to know, skip this part...David suffered from seizures throughout the film secondary to his traumatic head injury. He was taking medication (the film actually shows him taking the pills responsibly before each race) and in such superb physical condition that he was able to qualify for the state finals in track. For a young man, that was in the hospital on monitors, to have a seizure that led to cardiac arrest is just unrealistic. I know they were trying to make a point- but there was just no reason for him to die- as the story was already fully developed at this point. It almost seemed as if they had to add in a shocking ending for the sake of surprising the viewer. It is even more unrealistic that Zachary, who just had his moment of coming back to faith one day earlier, was going to be able to sustain his faith after such a tragedy. He was angry and upset after his mother died and father left for a long time, the loss of his brother more than likely would have thrown him back into anger and despair-at least in the short term- not strengthened his faith. The film would have been 5 stars had David lived.***END SPOILERSOverall, it was a touching film that I would have recommended, but the ending is just too depressing and downright ridiculous to bother wasting time on. There are plenty of other religious films that have a similar story line of coming back to faith after difficult times. People don't watch movies like this to be depressed- reality is depressing enough! I can't recommend this film.
