Van Patten's ABC's of Collecting Nippon Porcelain: Identification and Values

It arrived sooner than expected and is in amazing condition for being used. Seem like it will be a very useful and informative book.

Great reference book!

We highly recommend Van Patten's ABC's. This book provides a firm foundation for anyone who is seriously interested in collecting Nippon. We have only recently begun to collect Nippon items. On a recent antiquing trip, this book was invaluable in helping us make more informed choices. The multitude of marks had us lost in confusion and having found prices all over the place in previous trips, we had no idea of what was reasonable, Van Patten's book cleared all this up. We had been passing up RC Nippon, not realizing that this maker made some of the best quality products, nor did we know that the maple leaf mark was Morimura, the precursor of Noritaki. The extensive images of the various marks helped us identify better quality pieces and even helped us recognize fakes. This book includes a huge photographic section of both real and fake pieces. In addition, we were amazed at the variety of styles Nippon embraced. Suddenly we found numerous iItems we completely ignored before. Having this book as a reference, we each made decisions on which products we preferred to focus, and to address the prices with the vendors. We both found chocolate sets, one by RC the other in cobalt by Morimura (1890's), in excellent condition and at prices below market value. We returned home feeling very pleased with our purchases, and recognized that we did so well only because of Van Patten's book. We highly recommend this book to anyone who is new to collecting Nippon. It certainly helped us make more educated decisions.

This book is full of useful information. And has hundreds of marks for identification. Great read!

This family collects Nippon, Japan, and MIOJ. We have other Nippon Porcelain books and were very pleased to find almost no overlap in items illustrated. This is helpful to us at the time we choose to sell off an item to make room for some new find. We cross reference any items we have to the page, book, and author where we have found it illustrated.
