A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting

Great content, goofy format.
Great content, goofy format. A very valuable resource for any contract drafter. However, it should be read with the understanding that it's merely one contract drafter's opinion, not a consensus among the entire contract drafting community. After reading for just a an hour, I poked holes in a few of the author's assertions. To me, contract writing is an art-form, not a science. There may be situations that call for a contract drafter to differ from the suggestions pointed out in this manual. The format needs improvement. It has a flimsy cover and a strange binding. It should either be a regular paperback, a 3-ring binder, or a regular spiral binding with a flat cover.

A great tool for students
This is an incredibly helpful book, especially for students like myself and those getting their first opportunities to draft real contracts. My copy arrived with a defect on about 20 pages due to some sort of binding error - holes were punched across the text as well as on the side of the pages for the spiral binding - but I noticed too late to be able to return the book through Amazon. However, as soon as I posted about it the Author personally reached out and offered to help fix the matter and get another copy sent to me. Looking forward to receiving a more intact copy soon. Very pleased!I too was surprised that it was spiral bound - Amazon should really have a way of publicizing that for pre-orders. But I don't think the binding detracts much, especially since the cover wraps around it.

Great Book but Kindle is $$$$
I purchased this book a few months ago and I liked it. Liked it so much that I thought I should also get the kindle version b/c the spiral bound nature of the hardcopy is cumbersome to transport and it can be difficult to read if anywhere else other than a desk. Then, oh yikes. I went ahead and did it. But dang, I thought ebooks were suppose to be cheaper. Not this one. All in all, it's a great book. But just a tad unhappy that I paid so much for the ebook to merely supplement my hardcopy.

This is the ONLY book for contract drafting!
I am a law professor of drafting contracts and this is the only author I recommend. His writing is clear, concise and a the perfect manual for my practice which requires me to write contracts on a daily basis. The only wish I have is that the book would be simultaneously available for download once purchased in print. It would be great to have it both ways and not have to pay for the same content twice.

great book, annoying format (spiral bound)
I enjoy Adams' take on the ultra-conservative world of contract drafting. The binding is weird though. It's spiral bound but also has this weird flap that makes it an awkward shape. I see that the product listing now mentions the spirals. That was not the case when I pre-ordered it, so it was an unpleasant surprise when it arrived. That said, as a transactional lawyer, I recommend this and wish his ideas were more prevalent.

Checklist of Potential Drafting Issues
This manual is useful for its breadth of issues covered. However, its discussion of many important issues lacks depth, and I disagree with many of the author's recommendations and conclusions. Therefore, use this manual as a checklist of potential issues, but not as a bible for the answers. The manual includes a very detailed table of contents; for example, for the "usages" chapter the table of contents has over 5 pages in order to list each word or phrase discussed in that chapter. If you don't already have them, consider instead the books by Bryan Garner.

Content is great, cover is not.
The content of the book seems great so far, but the book's cover is flimsy and cheap. Instead of having an exterior spiral binding with a hard cover built in, the interior pages are spiral bound and the "cover" is a laminated paper wrap that I'm sure will tear off in no time.

Superb for both practitioners and students
I teach advanced contracts and at the start of the course show students 5 to 10 books that might be useful during the course and later in their careers. I then note that this is actually the only book they would ever need. It is well written, has excellent examples and practical advice, and also has the right perspective throughout regarding what actually matters and what doesn't.

Ought to be Handed Out at Bar Admissions
No one should be practicing law without this book on their desk within arm's reach. Lawyers young and old will discover just how arbitrary or anachonistic writing contracts has become after reading the first three pages.Writing laws makes endure and be shared. Learn to write ones that ought to last.

Best Book to Understand Contracts/Agreements
The author does a wonderful job in following:1. laying a framework of the contract/agreement2. providing a commentary as to why the framework is the way it is3. recommending as to what is archaic and how the contractual language should be used.Although the author analyses from the US contractual language perspective, I believe that his arguments and recommendations are about equally applicable to English and civic law countries' contractual language. Most importantly, it helps a non-lawyer or anyone with no background of contracts understand the entire framework, including the lingo that goes into such contracts or agreements.Best value for money!
