ONE OF THE CLASSIC THRILLER OF ALL TIME
The year is 1327. Franciscans in a wealthy Italian abbey are suspected of heresy, and Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate. When his delicate mission is suddenly overshadowed by seven bizarre deaths, Brother William turns detective. He collects evidence, deciphers secret symbols and coded manuscripts, and digs into the eerie labyrinth of the abbey where extraordinary things are happening under the over of night. A spectacular popular and critical success, The Name of the Rose is not only a narrative of a murder investigation but an astonishing chronicle of the Middle Ages.( last 30-40 pages is about meanings of some words{like historical data } that we don't know.!( which is actually related to Christianity ...) great work by translator MADAN SONI )

For lovers of proper literature only
This is not for people looking for dime fiction or cheap thrillers. It's flawless literature yes, but a payoff only for those who have the patience to leaf through a work that demands it. It's a generalization to say it's a murder mystery set in a medieval monastery of the Benedictine Order. It's that but there's so much more to it. It's about monks devoted to literature as much as god, about the complex relationships of the monks within that order, about the political tussle and power play of separate orders of Christianity with each other and with kings and successive popes, about how stupid and how intellectually adept these ancient men were. It's hilarious at places and disturbing at others. But overall, it's a rich work of art.I tried to cover the essence of the book without giving anything away.
